Hi - We have an adult male GSD and have a new female GS puppy (11 weeks).  I buy puppy dog food and adult dog food.  Both dogs start out eating their intended food but often times switch and eat each others.  Is this o.k.?  or should I start feeding them in different rooms?

thank you for any response!

I'd feed them in different rooms.
I typically feed mine in the crate, but different rooms, or putting the adult out to go potty while the pup eats, would probably be better.

I doubt its horrifically harmful for the adult to have a nibble of puppy food, or vice versa, but it could cause digestive upset in the pup, and could piss the adult off and cause him to take discipline into his own hands where the pup is concerned.

Dogs should be fed separately or in crates.  It's not bad to have a little, or say you ran out of puppy food so pup ate adult food for a few days, but long-term they should probably have different diets.  What kind of food is it?

I feed them the wellnessdog food - adult and puppy.  My male does not seem to mind sharing.  They very happily go back and forth between each other's dishes.  I am just wondering if I should be concerned about it from a nutritional stand point.

I'm not sure what the nutritional make-up of wellness is....but, I don't think it will harm either. I switched my pup to adult food when he was only about 4months old. I believed the puppy version was causing him to grow too quickly. Whichever dog is getting more food than they are used to might get fat, but that's about it I would think.

thanks for your replies.  I am not going to stress about it.  I fed them together again today and my adult dog and puppy seem to be eating the right amount of food on their own. I just make sure that they start out with their own bowls.  I think I am better off to not make a big deal out of it at this point - especially if they are not. Thanks again!

You're asking for trouble not feeding them seperately, but I guess we'll just have to wait 6 months for the "OMG, my adult GSD attacked my puppy!" thread.

I have always fed my dogs in the same room and in 13 years and multiple dogs (5 GSDs and multiple resuces of all shapes and sizes) I've never had an issue and they go back and forth between dishes as well.  Not to say that you never will, but I never have.  Puppies and adults together and no issues.  Right now I have a 12 week old and a 2 year GSD old that trade back and forth and no issues.  I also haven't had a dog that has had food agression either.  I've always been able to move the dishes or move the food at any time without any back talk from my dogs.  I had an old mixed breed rescue that would growl quietly when another dog came near but when push came to shove he would walk away and switch bowls.  Never so much as showed a tooth.  I've never made a huge deal out of it.

What I don't understand why you have different food for different age group?

As far as feeding dogs I feed my in a create, but the crate stays open now since they don't go after eachothers food any more.
