Hey guys,
I've been wondering for some time..
My dog tends to sleep like that in the crate. He's been doing it ever since I can remember. Will there be any long term damage to the teeth?

Difficult from photo to estimate size of dog versus size of the crate. Is there any clear space behind the dog?

I personally would have stopped him doing this from the start. If he gets stuck and panics....
My cattledog pup got her jaw stuck in the crate door, the very first night we brought her home, as luck would have it, she didn't panic just squeaked til hubby freed her a few seconds later. No damage done and a cattledog with a healthy regard for wire crating (Although trying to nose bonk the car tailgate and dog guard to destruction doesn't apply cos she says thats different!)
If we hadn't have been right there though...it could have been a very different scenario, your dogs older so no risk of a twisted jaw but a stuck tooth + panic = well think about it.... not only damage possibly to the dogs tooth and gums but also possible jaw damage (dislocation/fracture and a serious issue with crating after the fact.
Just because he hasn't done it so far, doesn't mean he won't in the future...also doesn't mean he ever will but i wouldn't take that risk. I swapped from full wire crates to vari-kennels due to incident in the past with snagged toes and the like, but theres still that wire aspect on the door.
A piece of perspex to cover the lower half of the crate door with holes drilled into the corners and 4 cable ties would do the trick

Very interesting why your dog wants to sleep like that. The only thing I can think of is he will bite down in his sleep and cause the teeth to fracture until they break. Will he sleep with one of those giant black kongs in his mouth? My Astra used to do that.
