Hi All,
This is my first post here and i am hoping someone can help. I have a 5month old GSD male and a few weeks back got him a galvenized bucket for his water. Last weekend he became ill - his motions became very loose and he was sick. He has been to the vet and is now on antibiotics but his motions are still very soft and his temp is still high. I have changed this buckett to a plastic one now but i hope i didnt cause this.

Zinc is an essential mineral but can become toxic in large quantities. I don't think water in a galvanized container would produce toxicity, as would an acidic liquid, but if there's any question in your mind, simply change to stainless steel.

I forgot to mention, you may run into more problems with plastic as it can be chewed and swallowed. Five month old puppies want to chew everthing because they are teething. I would go for stainless or ceramic, much better choices.

many thanks for your input, i have tried to get a stainless steel bucket to no avail bit have just got a large stainless bowl for his water. I was not happy putting out a plastic bucket as you said because he IS chewing all in sight. Many thanks once again.

May I ask why it must be a bucket, not a large bowl? I know pups have a tendency to spill their water and play with the dish, but if he's being supervised, I don't understand why it must be a bucket.

We have used galvanized buckets for years. We have never had any problems with them. I do change the water in the morning and at night. Thourough cleaning of the buckets at least every other day, also done. Like I said, I have never had any problems in almost 30yrs.

Never put any form of vitamins in a galvanised Bucket or Bowl, you will get a reaction or the one drinking from it will That i learned 50 odd years ago, Stainless steel drinking bowl set in a stand to stop the dog pulling it out My Pup splashes around in hers no problem i just wash it out and replace it sometimes she throws her ball in and bats it out with her feet then throws it back in the water keeps her busy
