Can anyone recommend a good dog bed that won't be shredded in five minutes by a four legged chain saw? Or a way to keep the shredding from happening?

Any dog that chews up it's bed, doesn't get one!! Some dogs are either too young, too immmature if they are not puppies or too wild.....
This is also the first step along the road to the land of Emergency vet clinics and a host of problems, foreign object blockages, etc....
I don't believe there is a material that won't suffer from being chewed on and as for stopping the behavior, what a ton of senseless work that would be!! I prefer to prevent the behavior and that way we both keep our sanity..
How old is this dog??

10 month old bitch. Very well mannered girl otherwise. I have taken the bed away for the reasons you mentioned DK.

ProudShepherdPoppa,
Went down this road over a year ago---Checked out a dozen websites, then investigated them personally in the stores.
My choice--Go to www.orvis.com
ToughChew Dogs Nest. Indestructible. Even the lining.
It's filled with the poly fill, but I also purchased medical grade memory foam and added it.
Orvis already has theraputic beds, but they're not big enough.
size---XLarge 70-110 lbs (50"dia) It's perfect. Your dog can lay a number of different ways and be comfortable.
The colors are deceiving on the website. Get forest green, and play it safe. I actually saw in person the different colors.

Yup, she's just too young.... got a long way to go before she earns such a privilege!! Can be an expensive lesson..
My almost 4 year old will sometimes get so fired up if we are at the club and things are going on that she will actually grab her bedding..
And my 6 year old Netherlands import chewed up a brand new bed this past spring... She will be 10 probably before she gets another chance, the maniac!!

ProudShepherdPoppa,
Just get the bed. I know you'll be happy.

Proud Shepherd Poppa,
DiKah is right on with this. If you have a dog who is a bed destroyer or chewer, take hers and my advice. Do NOT give this dog a bed until it grows up. Even when she is older she may well want to chew up beds. No dog here gets a bed if they show ANY sign of chewing up beds. Some just chew and destroy. But one can never be sure that any given dog will also eat part of it. If they do, at a minimum, assuming you catch it soon enough, you probably will have a several thousand dollar vet bill for surgery to remove the item. If it is not caught in time, you will have a dead dog. Dogs do not need beds. If they do not destroy them and the bed is one that can be cleaned, since some of my dogs have sealed concrete inside kennels, I provide a soft bed for them. But these are dogs who do not destroy things. No boarding dog gets a bed either. Almost to a dog, owners will tell me their dog does not destroy beds. Even though they probably get more time outside and more attention, dogs who are kenneled almost invariably tear their beds up. The minute I see that, any bed their owner provided *(and I do not allow foam except for arthritic and very old dogs) have the bed removed. The risk is too great when you know you have a dog who likes to chew things up. Give her good marrow bones instead!

As to the chewing behavior--she's 10 months and most go through this period---from random to severe chewing. She'll probably soon stop. It's like someone pushed a button, and you have a different dog. But even if you have an occasional setback, I will reiterate.
The bed cover material is, as I said, virtually indestructible. Even when my youngster would try and chew---it's impossible to rip and he'd stop---no fun. If I ever saw anything else, it would come off the floor. Your choice PSP. I'm a fanatic about anything dangerous. What pup hasn't at least had one mishap with the corner of a rug, the leg of a coffee table, pillows, etc. Do you get rid of everything in the house?
At least you know of one bed that has been tested, and gets a 4-star rating. Wish others had posted, though, to see if there was one I missed. Give it a try, and see how she does with it?
Good luck.

None of our females gets bedding. The youngest is 9-months the oldest is 2 1/2-years. ALL still destroy anything put in with them. And if anything is accidently left where they can get a corner through the crate, it's chewed too. For us it's not worth the risk, they do fine in their crates at night with no bedding. Crates in the trailer have rubber mats. All crates have kongs to chew on. No bedding though.

correct comment -- privledges are earned -- noe step further -- as for myself -- i would not put anything else in the crate either -- most likely if a pup chews on thing it will another -- i have hade GSDs that in an hour have chewed through the toughest kkong and that was when they had an hours plus run behind my snowmobile !! upon mautity -- chewing beavhvior just extiguished -- now these dogs have earned run of the house !! and they are 9 by my couch at once --no furniture chewed -- so be patient
