well, well, well.someone at last sticking up for us to a certain degree.wot do people expect when the gsd has been in the top list for most popular pedigree dog for donkeys years.its the unscrupulous back yard breeders that have been the culprits.i know of one person who was prepared to mate her bitch to a male who had EPI,but his owner refused.their answer was.......well the puppy purchasers wont know.if this bitch had been mated the progeny would have been kc registered.THANK GOD THE MALES OWNER DECLINED.this is wot the kc should be doing,STOPPING THIS SORT OF BREEDING.i cant see why they cannot have a data base site where breeders and pet owners can state if a reg.dog has a genetic health problem ,where other breeders can go to when planning litters.the way things are at the moment everyone is in the dark.Dorothy  and Chris have some details re their involment with the research into pedigrees of animals with epilepsy,AF etc.but cant name any animal until its dead.wot use is that.we should be able to ring and ask about a certain animal and be told the truth.no wonder we are in this mess.Carole Spelman.ps i had reason to ring the kc up recently,to obtain a form enabling me to show lily who has recently had to be spayed due to an open pyometra, and asked if they could delete the dogs reg.to me who have died and they advised me that they had no facility to do this????/

Just in case you have high blood pressure, I suggest you sit down with a glass of brandy when you read this post on behalf of Pam Edgington.

14 March 2010:

Here it is the last day at Crufts 2010.. I feel totally humiliated. At 76 years old and what? 40 years in the breed? Because a kennel club official and their Vet said my 5 month old baby GSD was unsound and they did not want her to be on a display team which the members of the public would see and which the K.C. felt was not the "sort of German Shepherd" they wanted the General Public to see I was asked to leave. Yes... Get out FAST ... leave the show. No questions of not going in the team again but "Get Out" ... LEAVE" How humiliating is that? A 5 month old baby? Loose yes ... Unsound at 5 months? possibly but 110% sound in character, 110 % sound in working ability - exactly WHAT are the K.C. looking for? Here we have 110% soundness of character - even the KC Official said that - but because she is a baby and loose I get banished from Crufts 2010. For my part - lets get away from this beauocracy and stupidness. We can do without it.

An emotionally shattered and humiliated lifelong GSD enthusiast

Read this blog with interest and it points out appropriately the anomalous and disingenuous approach taken by the KC,

A point I would like to make however is this.

Notwithstanding the obvious, life threatening problems that the KC have allowed to develop in certain well documented cases, when comparing other working breeds to the GSD you see massive concerns and anomalies.

I don't own GSD's from Showlines, and it is fair to say my Working Line dogs do not have any of the features that concern me in SOME GSD showlines (temperament issues, size, exaggerated top lines etc) which only concern me from the perspective of working ability. I do not consider the modern "Alsatian" a GSD so won't mention that animal here.

Compared to some other working breeds, nevertheless, the difference between my Working Line Dog anatomically and the average Showline is pretty minimal.

This was brought to my attention on the way back on the courtesy bus from Crufts. At my club I train a couple of Rottis- very athletic, able and praiseworthy animals. Medium size and with all the attributes of an able working dog.

On the bus I met a very friendly. but HUGE Rott that looked more like a Mastiff to me that the dogs I train. The dogs prominent feature was a massive head that did not look characteristic of that Breed as I know it. The owners were talking and I overheard that the Judge "hadn't liked" the bigger dogs today. I looked at the Breed Standard and the dog was way off in terms of size. (but must have qualified to be at Crufts) If this dog was representitive of a Showline Rottie, they have bigger (pardon the pun) problems than us.

Things are not as bad in our backyard as the KC would advocate.

hello nugget and thank yu for your post.it was relevant and i like that yu  said SOME GSD AND NOT ALL GSD.as with everything else in the world, size has increased not just in the canine world.i think the SV is trying to address this, but i suppose cos most animals are now oversize it has become a problem.it does annoy me tho.when in critiques/ads. a male is describe as correct size at 65cm.to me this is TOP SIZE,a correct size male to me is a 62.5 cm animal.AM I NOT CORRECT?i would say that in the german lines temperament is not too much a problem, not many windy animals imo,BUT in the alsatian(suppose i,ll upset a lot of these people)their temperaments are not very good.i do think that some of the handlers on the germanic side need to be careful on how they stand their charges as sometimes they do not present a pretty picture.take the crufts bitch ticket winner.when stood up after her class and the challenge, she looked absolutely beautiful,BUT in the challenge for bob.IMO.she was bunched up,shortening her body and making her look very peculiar.NOW IF THAT PICTURE HAS BEEN TAKEN,WOT IMPRESSION IS IT GOING TO GIVE??????SO HANDLERS PLEASE BE VERY,VERY CAREFUL WITH YOUR CHARGES.to the owners od QUAXIE,well done she,s a lovely bitch and i,ve always thought so.Carole Spelman.

I agree with a lot of the comments here.  I haven't seen much of showline dogs in the last decade or so but did see a bit of the judging this year.  I thought the res bitch CC winner was beautiful and without the modern day exaggerations that many of the showline dogs undoubtedly have.  She moved soundly, was superbly handled on a loose lead and allowed to stand naturally without the pushing and shoving that creates a distorted outline.

I think it is shameful of the KC to use the GSD as an example, and proof of how they are addressing health concerns in dogs.  There are far more deserving breeds that seem to be escaping without notice.  That said, there is no doubt that the GSD does have constructional exaggerations that are a result of breeding for the sole function of winning in the ring.  When such eminent scientist as prof Patrick Bateson refer to the breed as exaggerated, then time has come to view this for what it is and not be sidetracked the KC politics.

Albeit thers a size limit ---- oversize dont kill tha dogs .  Easy fer tha alsatians ta be unda tha size limit wen they breed tha front legs sa short like tha corgis !.

Yeh Noddi ---- different stance styles giv different pictures an tha harda tha dogs pull on tha leads tha more the middle o tha back has ta bend up aye.

A video made an published of tha same dog handled in tha different styles wuld help put tha kennel clubs pathetic vendetta on movement ta bed aye !. Betta still to ave 1 GSD an 1 Alsatian on video ta show how they both look sa different wen handled in both styles aye !!!!!!!!!.

AS FER CLAIRE BALDING SHE SHULD BE MADE TA MEET THA B.O.B DOG ERSELF IN PERSON WITH THA T.V. FILMING ----- THEN DARN WELL RETRACT HER WRONG STATEMENT PUBLICALLY AYE !!!!!!!!!!!.

LETS GIV THA KC A CHALLENGE WI THAR PREFERRED BELOVED ALSATIANS TA SHOW US HOW MANY OF EM AV THA TEMP, CHARACTER AN CAPABILITY TA WORK LIKE THA BOB WINNER !!!!!!.  BE REAL INTERESTIN TA SEE HOW MANY DOGS THEY CAN FIND ESP HEALTH TESTED UNS AYE !!!!!!!!!.
