Good Afternoon,
I have a GSD rescue who has developed colitis. It's been a really lousy couple of weeks with my poor girl suffering from bloody diarrhea and constantly needing to go outside, not always making it of course.  We've had to get up to let her out 3-4 times a night, and it's made us completely sleep deprived.  The Vet has prescribed Tylan capsules and we have started her on them along with Flagyl.  I didn't realize until I looked at the bill that this medication is costing $100 a week.  If we have to keep her on it long term I really need to find an alternative source as the vet charges top dollar for it.  I have tried Pet-Meds and a few other sites, but since I am in Canada I have been unable to find any online source for it.  Does anyone know of a website or company I can contact to get this in Canada?  Also, is this a very effective drug? I'm hoping this, along with a change of diet will do the trick, but I'd like to hear from others who this drug has shelped.

Thanks for any information anyone can provide.

Have you tried the TSC stores?  (if you find a replacement, make sure it is identical to what you've been given, or discuss the differences with your vet... like "phosphate  vs  HCl, etc"). You could try  KV VET Supply- an american company but may sell to Canada? It should not be that expensive.

I would be feeding that dog raw, plenty of bone. Your vet will have a conniption fit, though.

I posted the earlier post  tonight re diarrheoa.  We got Tylan last week after waiting a week for it because it was so popular with the suppliers.  It has not made any difference to our dog and he is back on his previous medication.  Apparently it has good reviews so hopefully will help in your case

You can find it at farm stores or online at revival animal health. It's labeled for use with poultry, but is the same stuff your vet prescribed.

Thank you all for the responses. I found it at KV livestock (on sale!) and will be ordering it tomorrow. Hopefully I have good results.

Hunter: I'm sorry to hear it didn't work for you.  I've had 3 GSD's and all of them had diarrhea at various times throughout thier lives.  My first dog, Dallas, got it almost every month.  With her, plain white rice after a day of fasting usually fixed it up.  In my current situation, my present GSD was usually very solid, but this has been going on for 6 weeks now and just wont let up.  I can handle the runs, it's the blood that worries me.

Good luck.

Tylan is super bitter if the dog is a picky eater you may have to get empty gel caps and fill them

The two most commonly recommended medications for colitis are sulfasalazine (Azulfidine Rx) and prednisone.
Sulfasalazine is recommended most commonly for lymphocytic/plasmacytic colitis and prednisone for eosinophilic and granulomatous colitis.  You can use metronidazole (Flagyl Rx) as a substitute for sulfasalazine and tylosin also works sometimes.

The vet said that we may need to try steroids if the tylosin doesn't work, or maybe a combination of the two.  Right now I'm hoping a month on the Tylosin with metronidazole clears her up and we can see what happens then.  I'm trying to source gel caps now as the tylosin I found is in bulk powder form and she's already balking at eating those.  Anyone know where I can find them?

Never mind, I found a whole whack of them by searching using the correct keywords.

Thanks again, and I'll post to let everyone know how it's going.

Hunter: Can you please let me know what ends up helping you?  I'm very interested in what your solution turns out to be.
