What are benefits of each?  Does anyone know?

One of my all time favorite dog care and maintenance sites is dogaware.com/ . The discussion on supplements is at dogaware.com/dogfeeding.html#supplements .

I think the difference between fish oil and salmon oil is price. The body doesn't care whether the omega-3 comes from herring, sardines, makarel, or slamon. We buy from www.puritan.com/ because they have terrific deals of 'buy x, get xx free' and they will accept returns of unopened containers.

Our choice for fish oil is their Triple Strength Fish oil #016105. I once made a spreadsheet comparing price per capsule to amount of EPA/DHA and selected the above product based on that work. I had included fish oil from CVS, Sam's Club, my grocery store, Puritan and Swanson's, I think.

I use Grizzlys Salmon Oil and the dogs love it.  It has the dogs coats really shiny.    No more itching problems since I began using it.

So are you using 1000 mg per 30 lbs of body weight as your measurements, or what??  Thx  Nan

It's about convenience and personal preference.

To healthy dogs we give 300mg Omega-3 per 30 lbs.
The ancient arthritic dogs gets 300mg Omega-3 per 10 lbs.

Not all fish oil products break out the amount of EPA/DHA per capsule but they all state how much Omega-3 they cointain. The stuff we buy has 1,360 mg fish oil per capsule and 950mg of that is Omega-3 fatty acids.

Rounded up by dog weight and Omega-3 content the well dogs get 900mg Omega-3 per day (1,360mg fish oil of the product we use). The old dog gets 1,800mg Omega-3 per day or 2 of the capsules.

I use the pump bottle.  My 2yr GSD gets 4 pumps & 8month gets 3 pumps per day.  Thats according to the chart on bottle, which has worked fine for me.

Good topic! I was wondering if I could use the human fish oil capsules because the Alaskan Salmon Oil, though I love the way the dogs look on it, is so expensive...And I was trying Jack Mackerel a few times a week, but it's over $2.00 per can.
Thanks for posting this!

I buy Spring Valley fish oil at Walmart in 1000mg you get 2 bottles of 150 capsules for around $6.  Right now because of winter drying out their coat I throw 2 capsules in with their food.

Great price! My male gets the itchy skin in the winter, so I was giving him the full dose of the oil and just a little squirt in everyone else's... At that price I can give it to everyone...thanks!
