I would be grateful for any advice on teaching the stand command. This is something I have not worked on before with a  dog. My present puppy  is a master of sit, down and stay etc, but I think I've not been quick enough to reward when I get him in the stand position, because before I know it he's sitting again! It's early days, he's only 14 weeks, but I'd be very grateful for any advice. I usually try to reward him when on leash (I keep him to my left) and we stop and I place one of my legs just in front of his right hind leg for a few seconds, say 'good stand', but he sits before I've even given him a treat. There hasn't been any time to talk about this yet at his obedience class, but I will do.

Muldoon,

Here's a video to help you out. Notice the timing of the reward. The puppy knows other commands, watch as she learns this new command from the beginning.

Excellent video, Dog1.  That's how I trained my girl.  If he starts to sit then don't reward him.  Keep the treat moving just out of reach so that he stands to get it.  You can work on the length of time as you go along.  Use your other hand on his flank rather than your foot in front of his.  Once he has this figured out then you can stack him and use your foot to help position his inside foot.  Good luck, now is an great time to teach him.  He's a little sponge.

Maybe I am different, but I use the "stay" command. Mine do learn to stay when told and understand not to move from position. By the time they learn this, I can position the dog and tell it to stay. Or, when the dog is standing on its own, tell it to stay. Mine pick up on this quickly, because they already know the stay command. The German word for stand is "steh" which sounds like shtay. Anyhow, this is what works for me. Just thought I'd share.

Use the tailgate of pick up or suburban  this works real good specially right after he gets out of the crate and he is checking out the new surrounding also you are at his eye level .Then use a board on the ground just big enough for him to stay on it it has to be solid and not moving so he feels comfortable to go on it, walk him around go to board let him get on it say the word . once gets perfect take it to the field. to avoid letting him to sit or walk use  leash to loop around his belly and clamp it to fur saver on his neck to guide him not to sit or move by gently lift him up just enough to not to go down .no hard correction .dog will look like a suitcase  . make sure leash is not tight on his belly. This way he is not get custom to your body cues.
