From 5th Jan 2010 on the request of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier Breed Council the KC will not be accepting registration from Merle coloured Staffordshire Bull Terriers
Could there now be a way forward for the GSD Breed Council to look into the same for colours that are undesirable in the breed standard as quoted by the KC web site.

There is an increased risk of impaired hearing and sight associated with it, particularly in dogs that are homozygous for MM. It’s nothing to do with the breed standard.
So what argument is there for the KC not registering non standard colours in the GSD?
Personally anything that gets them away from deliberately breeding for non standard coat colour is a blessing but using the SBT argument is not going to do it with this KC, unless there has been some recent scientific emergence that the non standard colour gene in the GSD is directly linked to a health issue????

The Breed Standard for a start

Thanks for putting me in the picture,
unfortunately did not know the reason and you have given a very good explanation.
I thought this could present an opportunity
as the KC only chooses to abid with the breed standard when it suits them.

For once the KC are taking the right approach and not accepting registrations due to health reasons. Personally, I would be more inclined to hope that this would pave the way for them to consider restrictions on registering progeny from GSDs with known health defects or untested dogs for breed specific health issues.
Colour in itself is not an issue in the health of the GSD, and in terms of colour/coat length, the standard is only a reflection of the 'fashion' of the current time. It can and has been changed and will be changed again in the future. Meanwhile health issues go unchecked - in any 'type' of GSD - standard coat, long-coat, off colours, black and red........

A buyer wants a healthy dog with a pedigree and a dog which will resmeble (in temperment) the breed they are buying. A buyer wants nothing more than a healthy, mentally stable dog, then once a buyer has found what they are looking for then they will look for certain coats lenghts and colours. The standard is just a guide nothing more and nothing less.
