I have a female that has had it once.  I am wondering now that she is healthy and isnt showing any signs, if it would be a trait passed on.  This might be a stupid questions, but I really dont see anything online about it.  I wouldnt want to breed her knowing she has had it and puppies could  inherit it from her.  I would also consult my vet about this before breeding her.

Pancreatitis itself is an inflammation of the pancreas caused by something eaten. Something usually too fatty or too rich that shocks their system. That in and of itself is not hereditary. The fact that their system is maybe more sensitive to these things might be, I don't know. If I had a dog that I felt was truly worthy of breeding, that had pancreatitis in the past once, but was otherwise in superb health, I would still breed the dog without hesitation. Theresa

I believe there is some type of connection.  One of my dogs has had a few flares of Pancreatits.  Last year I found out his dam had problems with pancreatits also.  There is a Genetic link to dog with EPI so why wouldn't there be a genetic link to being more prone to Pancreatitis?

The root of EPI is completely and totally different from the cause of pancreatitis. The only similarity is that they both have to do with the pancreas. They are NOT related in any way. The genetic factor may be in having a more sensitive digestive track, but that's it. It's similar to getting a really upset stomach from something you ate, (pancreatitis) as opposed to being born with an actual systemic malfunction that needs continual treatment. Theresa
