Is this common in the GSD breed? Has anybody ever experience this kind of bone infection torwards their dogs before? what are the chances of recovery?

Its been about 17 years ago, I had a Bitch that had a staph infection on one of her long bones, at first the vet seemed to think it was cancer. He did a bone biopsy and it turned out to be just an infection. Oral antibiotics fixed it and she lived to be 13yo. I dont know if that was similar to Osteomyelitis or not.
