Can someone please explain the use of Vom or Von before a kennelname.
Thanks for the response.

Von & Vom are German for "from" depending on the German word that follows it; it is a maskuline or feminine or neutral. Vom = von dem (maskuline), Von = neutral, Von der (feminine). If you are not familiar with the language why use it and not use your own language prefix or suffix?

Petros,
I don't recall the poster saying they planned to use "von or vom", they only asked a question. Has it occurred to you that maybe they have a puppy or dog with von or vom in the name and wanted clarification as to what it meant? There are no dumb questions as the saying goes, but I've sure seen some dumb answers.

The German prepositions "vom", "von", "vom dem", "von der" "vom den" all mean the same thing, essentially the equivilent of the English words "from" and "from the". The difference in usage depends on the gender of the following noun that is part of the title (titled names, not Schutzhund titles) similar to what a member of the German aristocracy would have received in days long gone.
You will also sometimes see the article "zum" which essentally means the same thing when used in this context.

Dear Officer Keller,
Bravo to your response. People must feel free to ask questions to better educate themselves without the fear of rebuke. How else will they learn, and what higher purpose can this board serve.

We have all started from scratch sometime or other...so why don't we just share our knowledge with people of the same interests...So many people have been kind enough to answer my questions when I asked and now I feel that it's my turn to help those that come after me...

Bob Kress,
EXCELLENT POINT! How did the experts become so sucessfull, certainly not with everyone being rude or refusing information, I'M NOT SAYING ANYONE WHO RESPONDED TO THIS POST WAS BEING SUCH, I'm just stating that in the Shepherd and Golden Retriever world, you'll meet some very sucessfull breeders, that share a great wealth of information, and others, that...don't. I feel witholding information is pretty selfish, I see no point in it. Now, I cant speak for everyone, but to those who come to me for information about the GR, I freely give all of my years of knowledge about both breed, and breeding, to those who show a genuine intrest in bettering the breed. Someone who calls me who just purchased a $50 dog out of the newspaper, and knows NOTHING about the breed, I will give no help. Simply because as YOU ALL WELL KNOW, NO QUALITY puppies cost $50. Okay, I'm rambeling, but for all of you who have helped me get into Shepherds, and tirelessly helped answer my many questions, I thank you with all of my heart and soul!
