Is it wiser to buy a pup from a well known Kennel in Germany, or contact a Kennel that is not as big, but try and and help the smaller Kennel get their name out there and noticed? If it were me, I would want to help the Kennel that is not as well know, but still has strong, healthy dogs, with good bloodlines. If you went to a Breeder that is not as well known in Germany, who would you recommend? Good topic? Yes/No? Dawn Bonome

I am a small breeder in Germany and have bred 8 litters in 25 years, so of course I would recommend buying from a small breeder, because we try to breed quality, not quantity. Money is not the reason for which I breed puppies, the reason I do so is because I believe in idealism. Names and address of the breeders can be obtained from the "SV Zuchtnachrichten", a monthly report showing which males where bred to which females here in Germany.

Dawn, ?? for you? Not being condiscending but would you only consider buying from a kennel in Germany ? my point is that the US is also producing top notch dogs. If you already live in the states would it not be even better to support a kennel in the states who is breeding quality? Small name or Big name... I personally think that the small name kennell probably has more one on one time with they're dogs, and has more time for socialization, However I do not know that as fact just know I would be considered small and have time to spend with all my dogs each and every day. I think the difference is Politics, if your gonna show you better buy big name, and hire big handler or you get no where, Just my expeirience. Eighter way the choice is absolutely yours to make, I am sure you know to do your home work and check things out and then make a decision based on your Wants, Needs, Desires, and be happy with the choice you make. Best of Luck to you !

EchoMeadows, Who in the US is producing top notch dogs? I am not trying to be rude here, I am just wondering. What needs to be done by the offspring from a breeder to be considered a top notch dog? I am always trying to follow who is doing what here in the states. Are you referring to top notch show dogs or top notch working line dogs? I would like to hear about both, but I am personally more interested in who breeds top notch working line dogs in the US. Shawn

Shawn, I would say there are many... There are many breeders here in the US who have and are continueing to improve the drive, stability, confidence, and health of the German shepherd. Zulu Von Beluga is a dog who won the USA Seiger Show in 2003, There is Harrison K-9 yes he imports alot but breeds some fine dogs as well, There is on the showline side, Sharobi's in Washington, They have been in this for 30 or 40 years and producing some of the finer show dogs year after year, proven lines, There is also on the working SV side, Ca-Ji Shepherds have some very nice proven lines 40 years in it. These are just the few I can think off the top of my head, But if you look around you will find them, I would consider a dog that would go and win a Seiger Show in USA which is breed specific a Top Notch dog, I mean seriously is our Seiger show in USA text any different from a show in Germany ? Not trying to be rude there, seriously asking the question, It's my understanding that we all follow the same rules and regs and must meet the specific requirements that are the same as in Germany, Have I been mislead ? I guess is what I'm asking. I can be honest with you and tell you I don't know the "Big" names, I have not been in this long enough to know them, However I have done alot of research and it's slowly all coming together. We happen to be breeding some super working dogs, In 4 litters produced we have 4 with K-9 handlers, 2 in Therapy work, 1 headed for SV ring while Sch. training. 9 others in Sch. and one headed for SAR. I am very pleased and while it will take a few years for us to get some titles under our name, We continue to improve our dogs, and remain committed to the breed and the sport. I think in the states things are a little harder as we have age restrictions here, so even if you have a hard dog at 9 months old it does not matter we are not allowed to trial until 16 or 18 months of age. That limit somewhat limits the level of completion a breeder can see and pass on. Not to mention that most people in the states are not as committed to the sch. sport as the people in Germany, I think this too has kept us behind a step or two, But I think we are still producing Calibur dogs here in the states comparable to Germany bred dogs. I mean honestly can we really say... Bred in Germany = Better than US ? without doing our homework, I would not be willing to make that statement, nor would I be willing to reverse it. There is no doubt Germany produces Calibur but they also produce much higher quantity than the US. So our one dog must compete against 10 there, well odds are in they're favor for sure. But I refuse to beleive that a "Small Kennel" is incapable of produceing Calibur dogs be it SV or Working. just my thoughts though.
