I have a 1.5 year old intact male with great drives. Problem is he gets tired really fast. For instance if I am playing ball with him, after about the 10th throw (or less) he retrieves it but stops about 5 feet away and just lays down. If I get it and throw it again, he still retirieves it very enthusiastically, and if I give him time, he will engage again himself after he has rested. Even with bitework he wears out really quickly. I kept thinking that as he got older his stamina would increase, but it just hasn't. I've tried to increase his time gradually. He loves to work and loves to play, he just doesn't last long. Doesn't matter if it is hot or cold, day or night. He is completely healthy. Is this just the way he is, genetic, or what? Is there anything I can do to build his stamina? Other working line dogs I have had would go all day if I let them. This is just new to me.
He also gets distracted with OB (he has excellent ob) and detection/tracking after just a short time, but I am hoping this has to do with maturity...

Without actually seeing what is happening my guess is one of three things:
1) Sometimes a dog gets bored and just says the hell with it. If this is a possibility look for other games that will keep his mind occupied and on you.
2) He has another type of injury that could be a nagging injury, not something terribly serious, but, enough to make him say that's enough for awhile.
3) He has some type of respiratory ailment.
My questions to you are:
Has he alway done this?
When you say he is tired (lays down), is he panting?
If the dog is not panting, then he, probably, is not tired and I would look at other reasons for this.
Are you in an area that a dog is susceptible to heartworm year round?
If so, I would have him checked again. It takes months for that to show up.
I would also consider a chest x-ray to see if his lungs are clear, any heart abnormality, etc.
Best wishes to you and your dog. I hope he is okay!

Could it be that he's just not that into this stuff? How is he on a long walk or run? THAT would be a better indicator of a health issue, IMO.
