There have been some accusations of police officer bashing, I have decided  to post police memorial week and my heart felt condolences to those officers families who were lost in the line of duty. Thank you for your service.

RIP officers.

ABOUT NATIONAL POLICE WEEK

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The Memorial Service began in 1982 as a gathering in Senate Park of approximately 120 survivors and supporters of law enforcement. Decades later, the event, more commonly known as National Police Week, has grown to a series of events which attracts thousands of survivors and law enforcement officers to our Nation's Capital each year.

The National Peace Officers' Memorial Service, which is sponsored by the Grand Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police, is one in a series of events which includes the Candlelight Vigil, which is sponsored by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) and seminars sponsored by Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.)

National Police Week draws in between 25,000 to 40,000 attendees. The attendees come from departments throughout the United States as well as from agencies throughout the world. This provides a unique opportunity to meet others that share a common brotherhood. In that spirit, the Fraternal Order of Police DC Lodge #1 sponsors receptions each afternoon and evening during Police Week. These events are open to all law enforcement personnel and are an experience unlike any other.

FBI: Number of officers slain on duty increased in 2011

http://www.cnn.com/2012/05/14/us/fbi-slain-police/index.html

Washington (CNN) -- Seventy-two law enforcement officers in the U.S. were slain in the line of duty in 2011, an increase of 16 over the previous year, according to an FBI report released Monday. The report does not include reasons for the rise.

The statistics collected by the FBI from police agencies across the nation reflects the varied nature of the killings. Fourteen of the victims were slain in unprovoked attacks. Eleven were killed while pursuing or stopping suspect vehicles. Six of the officers died while engaging in tactical operations. Five were slain in entrapments or ambushes, five others were killed while conducting investigations, and another five were killed after responding to robbery calls.

"Each of these losses is devastating," FBI Director Robert Mueller said in a statement, "and each one reminds us that the safety and freedom we enjoy come only at great cost."

The suspects used firearms in 63 of the 72 killings. That includes 50 by handguns. Seven were killed with rifles and six with shotguns.

The largest number of slain officers, by region, occurred in the South (29).

A final report including analysis of these killings, and the number of assaults on officers last year, will be released this fall in the annual uniform crime report.

The FBI figures were released at the beginning of Police Memorial Week. Many thousands of officers are expected to come to Washington to honor officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. Among the events scheduled Monday is a ceremony at the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco and Explosives (ATF) Memorial Wall honoring William Henderson Foote, a Treasury officer who in was killed in the line of duty in Mississippi in 1883. Foote was the first African-American federal officer slain in the post-Reconstruction era.

My PD has lost 3 officers in the last 7 years.  All three were friends of mine, one was added to the Memorial on Sunday at the vigil.  Died just before Christmas.  All 3 had families and children.  My partner was shot and killed, standing next to me as we attempted to make entry on a Narcotics search warrant.  Just before the entry, the last thing he and I discussed were the dogs inside and I told the entry team I would deal with the dogs.  The only one shot, the only one killed was my partner when the suspect started shooting at us.  No dogs were injured, the suspect was unharmed, but two kids lost their dad.

I am actually disappointed to see this posted on this site.  I find this site has become very anti law enforcement and it is rather disturbing to me.  I am finished commenting on this topic or any other here.  I can not be part of a forum that has such an obvious anti law enforcement agenda and such hate and disgust for Police Officers.   I'm sure some will disagree, but that is my feeling on how this site has been allowed to become.

I would be disrespecting my friends and fellow officers, alive and dead to post any further on this forum.

Sorry you feel that way Jim but it is a real issue with DOGS and members have the freedom of speech. We aren't going to stop people from posting their opinions just because it upsets a few. This site is not anti-police, it is more along the lines of anti-dog abuse. And since you have been a member there has always been an anti-police presence by certain members, nothing new and it has actually gotten better than in the past. This for me has nothing to do with anti-police and more to do with anti-dog abuse.

Sorry, you lost your partner, I know full well about the lose of friends and family. I also know about the lose of pets.

You stay safe.

Both have be on the police force and have worked their way from writeing parking tickets to swat, and now swat instructor. I'm proud of them both for their good work even though we debate dogs, tactics and such I do respect them and you for your valued service.

Jim,

I think there are a lot of people here who support the Police. They are just staying off of the controversial threads lately. Myself included.

To show our support last year my wife & I donated enough money to vest a State Police Canine. We didn't want any fanfare or attention for our efforts. But we were invited to a Dog event and although there were thousands of people there we alone got to spend most of the afternoon with four of the MA State Police and their canines. We had a great time and all four of the officers looked big enough to play for the New England Patriots. So I appreciate and thank you & Boomer for your service.

Here is a few pictures from that event.

So sorry to hear of your loss Jim.  Very sorry for your partner's wife and children.  For all those police officers who gave their lives in the line of duty, all of us owe them a great debt.  Losing someone in such a tragedy is very difficult and it stays with you for life.  I experienced such a tragedy in 2007 when one of my students was struck by lightning outside of our school and died in front of me while I was on the phone with 911 and my coworker was administering CPR.   Something like that  you wish you could forget, but can't.   You have my deepest sympathy.

Jim,
I see no bashing here, only GSD's attempt to honor the fallen.

Good people die everyday, from every walk of life.

It's your choice,

Moons.

by beetree on 15 May 2012 - 12:05

Moons, this thread is the "foil".  The bashing is/was happening specifically on another thread, and generally whenever the opportunity presents itself. IMHO

For Jim,

So sorry, you must miss your friends terribly.
