My husband & I took great lengths to select what we thought was the best German Shepard Breeder in our area.  Told breeder we wanted female from her dogs while the dogs were just breeding.  Put down deposit for female while the dog was pregnant.  We talk at length after the puppies were born - only 1 female in the litter.  We visited the puppy 2 weeks ago.  And now with just 2 days before we are to take ownership the breeder says they want to keep it!  Do I have any rights to this puppy?

While I know how disappointing this sort of situation is, I do not believe you have a right to the puppy.  With that said, you should be getting your deposit back depending on the agreement.  Did the breeder refund the deposit?

No sadly you don't .  A deposit is just that.  Most breeders bred to continue their breeding programs.  One female in the litter often means it will be held back.  The deposit will most likely be returned to you unless it is non-refundable.  In that case it will be moved on to the next litter.

How frustrating!  It took us a month at least to pick the breeder & then waiting for the dogs to get pregnant & finally supposed to come home 2 days!  I have a 10 year old that is going to heart broken!  It was not specified if the deposit was refundable or not.  I'm just so pissed - they never told us, they wait for us to call them!

I agree. Get a male. Genetics and the individual personality of the pupoy play a MUCH bigger role in the overall temperament of the dog than gender does. I've never gone in to a puppy purchase with a specific gender in mind. Actually that I a lie. I have twice and both times I ended up with the gender opposite to what I thought I wanted. I pick the puppy first, gender is secondary. I bet you can find just the puppy you want within the boys. And I am still happy with my choice years later.
