can a bitch really eat her litter? i recently read it somwhere but dont belive it,can this really happen?

Yes it can happen. When I was a little kid we had a Collie who did this a couple of times. Well, not the whole litter, but many of the puppies.

Yes it can definitely happen.
When I was a child our Siberian Husky bitch killed and ate half her litter and injured the remaining puppies so severely we had to have them euthanised. She was spayed as soon as was safely possible after that.

do they eat them alive or if they are dead?

In our instance the bitch killed and then ate. The puppies were about 3 days old, everybody was fat, healthy and viable. Went to bed to happy, grunting, nursing puppies and relaxed bitch, woke up to a horror scene.
