I have a 5 months old female german shepherd, she was so shy and weak when i got her, after lot of daily effort in making her socialized, taking her to public spots, letting her meet new people, her shyness has almost gone now, she's not afraid of new people/dogs. She has become so big in this age that she seems like a male GSD. Then problem is, i never heard her barking since i got her, its been 3 months.
Actually i once heard her barking when a new dog tried to share her kennel and she kept barking at him unless she got her kennel back without sharing.
believe me guys except that incident i never ever heard her voice. she is so playful, i take her for 1 mile walk+ she plays football and retrieve balls when i throw etc the reason behind explaining this stuff is that she is so normal and very happy. but i never heard her barking, i want her to be a guard dog, she's not afraid to people but she dont bark at anyone whatever i am there or not.
I know she is not that old to be a guard dog but i had experience of having some other gsds before and they used to bark on strangers etc, but i never never heard her barking. she'd keep looking at strangers but won't bark or try to feel uncomfortable.
please advise me that what should i do, I REPEAT that i want her to be a guard dog, please dont suggest to hire some professional trainers i dont have any trainer in my area.
regards

Hi, give her some more time, at least 4 to 5 months. You are right, she is young, and all dogs mature differently. She is not close to being mature yet.
It sounds like you are spending alot of time bonding with her, and that is great. Keep it up!

Pup should bark at strangers/intruders as soon as 6 weeks. On the other hand I would make sure that you are not encouraging the dog to bark on a falling leaf, birds , cats, horses, cars and so on. Good dog should be neutral to most stimuli . That is achieved through proper socialization and training. But dog should be aggressive in certain level towards intruders and other threats. That is achieved through proper socialization and training. But proper breeding is of most importance.
These days people do not train their dogs to be discriminative barkers thus such the dogs bark all the time and breeders are killing important inherited territorial instinct because people have problems with such dogs.
If I would be you, at this point I would start encourage the dog to bark on suspicious or threatening people and later when the dog is about a 14 months I would train it level one protection. ( in level 1 the dog is encouraged to be territorial and bark on command and when situation requires it and otherwise must be quiet. )
However make sure that the dog is discriminative and does not bark on everything. Hire a competent trainer.

Tell me where do you keep the dog? In the house or in the outside of the house. Free in the yard or in the kennel?

(If they are barking - they are not biting)!!! But there mere presence is often enough!
