I was cruising through the grocery store today and saw they had some Pork Neck Bones on sale in the meat section. I bought them and so far have only given one piece to each dog.

I looked up raw pork feeding when I got home and some say it is totally fine others say to never feed raw Pork.

Can anyone shed some light on this and WHY. Please don't give me a "No don't feed it" or "Yes feed it" answer, I would like an explanation as to WHY.

On the sites I searched, some mentioned a Pork born illness starting with a T (don't remember the name of it) and others mentioned worms as well. Other websites said it was totally fine to feed pork as long as it was human grade, not the undesireables from a buther or other such slaughter house.

I am dabling into potentially feeding raw at this point, or raw and kibble, so this is sadly an area I have very little expertise in. Thanks for any help offered.

I feed them all the time. Tricinosis is very rare in this country and not enough of a concern to avoid all pork. If you want to avoid wild boar, etc., then that's different. I feed both, though I will deep freeze any really crazy wild game just to be extra safe.

Thank you, I really wasn't sure and would hate to be doing something detrimental to either my puppy or my adult dog, when I'm only trying to improve their diet, ya know?

I feed Taste of the Wild kibble to both kids, but wanted to also slowly introduce some raw products as well.

Thank you for your imput, I hope others, too will comment.

Yep I also feed pork neck bones all the time;  use that totally for a meal though, not just a snack.  Also feed raw ground pork, human grade of course with no problems.  I use it in Honest Kitchen Preference and mix with all sorts of raw ground meats in AM, yogart, eggs.  Then sometimes use pork neck bones for PM meals, I give several depending on weight of dog for complete meal, nothing else, helps whiten teeth, is a fair amount of bone though so you might have to add a pork chop for x-tra meat depending on your dogs.  BOL  Nan

I don't use processed pork though, like bacon, ham or anything salted/cured;  I keep it human grade and natural as possible, no addiitives at all.  Nan

I don't feed pork to my dogs, mostly because working at a vet has taught me that most dogs have trouble digesting pork, and it can cause things like GI upset and pancreatitis. However, this is usually cause by high amounts of ingested pork, not that which is left on the bone (I'm just paranoid haha). If it's Triconosis that you're worried about, it's very rare to catch in the US, unless it's from raw meat of wild hogs.

Thanks Nan and Macrowe1, do either of you know about the worms that is supposedly in Pork meat? Seriously, I've read so many websites my head is just spinning.

I use SafeGuard (Fenbendazole, same ingredient in Panacur) for both of my kids and regularly get fecal checks at the vet, but are the worms supposedly in pork ones that aren't covered by Panacur?

I been feeding human grade pork once a week for three years and my dogs have not exhibited any problems.  They've never had worms either. Join the Yahoo raw feeding group. You'll get a wealth of info there.

Dr. Karen Becker has some very good videos on raw feeding. They are on youtube. She talks about the myth about worms and feeding raw meat..
