Sore paws - Page 1

Hi, My GSD has sore paws on his back legs. In fact, he has a weeping wound just above his right back paw. There is is a very small puncture from where it is weeping. I did take him to the vet who prescribed a week's course of antibiotics with anti inflammatory tablets. These had a little effect but did not clear it up. Anyway, I've checked on here and found a post from someone that had the same issue with his or her dog. It was advised that Happy Jack Kote is applied to the wound. I am in the UK and cannot find a supplier for this product here. I was wondering if thre something similar that can be bought here? Thanks

It sounds to me like your dog may have an abcess or there may be a foreign body like a splinter or a grass awn imbedded in his foot. Toughening the pads may not be the answer to the problem. Have you tried soaking his sore foot in warm water?

Thanks, I'll have look on the net for that product. Yes, I have been soaking both his feet in water with salt in it, this was on the breeder's and vet's advice. Also, I was applying sudafed cream to it after soaking. That has not really done much. Since yesterday I have been soaking both feet in dettol diluted in warm water. I hope this will help it heal. You're probably right about he abscess as there is some swelling on the right foot. Although this was there when I took I'm to the vet, more swollen then though, but the antibiotics did not clear it up. Does the soaking with warm water clear up the abscess over time?

He might  need a different antibiotic. I think I'd talk to the vet about that. The soaks are good, but an abcess is generally the result of a bacterial infection or a foreign body.

Will pop him to the vet tomorrow then. Cheers!
