Hello i wonder if anyone here can give me some advice before i take my little puppy to the vets tomorrow evening. She is 8 weeks old and for the past 10 days after her meal she has been being sick. She rushes her meal down sits down and whines then throws the lot up. After she has been sick if i dont get to her in time she will eat it and then she keeps it down. She has lost a little weight and doesnt appear to be be as big as her sisters. We are booked in at the vets tomorrow but i just wondered if anyone had any suggestions as to what could be causing this.

Sorry but it sounds like a pretty severe case of megaesophagus. Copy and paste this to the browser bar for more threads on Mega http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/bulletins.search?s=megaesophagus&b=AND&r=25

There are several possibilitiies, only one of which is mesoesophagus. The pup may simply be eating too much and too quickly. Try feeding smaller amounts more frequently. She could have parasites. Has she been dewormed? The food may be in a size that is too large. Taking her to the vet for a checkup is a good idea. Good luck.

If this was my pup, I would have a barium x-ray done on it. It could be Mega, it could be Persistant Right Fourth Aortic Arch. There are so many possibilities here.

i agree with hodie - could be something other than mega. definitely have the pup checked by your vet, but in the meantime think about putting the pup back on his baby food. i had one pup in a litter that did what you describe. i put him back on the weaning mush that i make for little pups and fed him apart from the rest of the litter so he'd slow down. within a few weeks, he no longer had a problem. he is now 16 months old and healthy as a horse!

I remember another thread where someone she (I think) said she thought her dog had Mega and it turned out the puppy was full of worms. Other people on the thread basically said she didn't know what she was talking about and it could only be mega. I just finished a college that has a veterinary department and I actually ask if that could be true and the Instructor/Vet said parasites can affect a dog and mock mega. The best way to find out is to take the puppy to the vet and let them determine the dx. Arrakis

Any news on this puppy? What did the vet do?

by blueskyekennels on 24 August 2006 - 02:08

Yes, we're all anxious to hear, how'd it go, what did the pup have, and is it going to be okay??? Please, you have people interested so they might spread the word on possible causes incase this comes up again

Hi there Thank you all very much for your comments, suggestions and general concerns. We took the Puppy to the vets where she stayed overnight to have some tests etc the following day. It has been a very anxious time for us all, but i am pleased to say it isnt the worst diagnosis that was predicted. The puppy basically had a huge belly full of worms in there. Even though they had all been wormed (including the said pup)_they think because she wasnt getting enough wormer into her tummy to remove them so they were getting bigger and not allowing food to pass through. The pup was successfully wormed at the vets and came home to us yesterday morning, she is now eating normally and is a very happy puppy. She will go back to the vets in 2 weeks have another worming and check up to make sure she is putting them vital pounds on. I would like to say a thank you to you all and i am so pleased i had somewhere like this to come to and find advice. So thankfully this time round its a happy ending for all concerned.
