ultrasound 28 days - maybe earlier depending on the vet and the quality of his skill and equipment. X-ray, usually the week before whelping. For x-rays you have to wait until the skeletons are "calcified" to see them clearly.

The earliest is 28 days after the last tie but I recommend at least 35 days. Marlene

Thank you Molly. I am getting a female from oversas who is beeing bred right now. How long should I wait before having her shipped? Should I wait until pregnancy is confirmed?

up to you - for her safety and that of the puppies, I would wait until mid-pregnancy, 30 days or so - she could be confirmed pregnant by then also if they have access to a good ultrasound and vet that knows how to read it. I would not ship her within two weeks of whelping either - so the "slot" of time you have to be safe is pretty narrow. I've seen pregnant dogs be shipped with no problems at all, and others that have lost their litters.

Ship around the 40th day of pregnancy. You can ultrasound as early as 21 days with newer equipment. Better to ultrasound around the 30th day if you want to be sure what you have because that is when the embryos have attached to the uterus wall. Before then what you see may not quite be what stays. Don't ship too early.

This past Monday I had a female that was 30 days pregnant have an ultra sound. The vet observed 3 embyos. He recommended an x-ray at about 55 days to confirm the number.
Why is it safer to ship at the 40th day?

It takes about 30 days for the embryos to attach to the uterine wall. At that time the embryos can no longer be re-absorned. Around the 40th day there is the least chance of abortion and its too soon for a premature birth. Plus the female arrives early enough to settle into her new surroundings. We have had the best results with shipping between the 40th and 45th day. So far always live litters.
