Pit Bulls No Longer "Vicious" in Ohio!!!!! - Page 1

This is a tremendous victory for all dog owners in Ohio and for Pit Bull type dogs everywhere! 
Gov. Kasich signed into a law a bill that changes the definition of dangerous dogs and specifically removes the pit bull from being declared automatically dangerous in Ohio.  The law starts in about 90 days from now. 

Ohio went from having one of the worst dangerous dog laws in the country to now having one of the best and most rational!   (Ohio was the only state in the U.S to declare all pit bulls automatically vicious)

I do not own nor have I ever owned a pit type dog, but I feel like celebrating! 

Plus, what is great about this law is it specifically does not punish dogs who were protecting their owners or their home from threat and criminals.

Isn't Ohio the state that allows anyone to own a tiger/chimp/whatever the hell you want, yet a put is deemed vicious from the get go? 

Good news. I do remember Ohio being really scary, as I remember being concerned even to drive though Ohio with my dogs in the car, though I don't remember the specifics of the old law. I just remember circumventing Ohio!

BMartin, yes that is the way that it has been.  Now finally that is changing.  truly dangerous exotics (tigers, lions, bears, chimps) will be restricted from private ownership (there is a temporary law on it right now, I believe, and a permanent one in the works.  Don't hold me to that, I can't remember the details off the top of my head, but I believe Ohio citizens and lawmakers are now serious about getting that problem changed after what happened in Zanesville)

Jenna, I feel you, if I owned a pit I would have been scared to drive thru here too.  But truthfully, Ohio has more pitbulls than any other breed.  I believe the population of pit type dogs in Ohio is more than triple the next most popular breed.   The law was that pits needed to be insured and were supposed to be muzzled when out in public and very securely housed at home.  I never actually saw a muzzled pit anywhere except at a free pit bull obedience class where I was a volunteer trainer for pits in a rescue.
The main reason why I never considered pit bull ownership was because I didn't want to have the hassle of the old law.  Now I feel I have the freedom to consider owning a pit in the future. 

Not all dog breeds are bad, I know of a pitbull that will like you to death & is sweet as pie!


I wish there was a universal way to get home renters to rent to anybody with any breed or size

to have them get the yearly AKC Canine Good Citizen test to prove it is a good dog

We use the ATTS!  They go farther then the ACK CGC.

NOT all dogs are bad I have learned it is bloodline as well as how they are raised.

More people need to be open minded on this breed, just as other breeds

they should be judged on their character not the breed. How sad  :(

 

Maybe there's hope down the road for ending all breed specific legislation??   Don't know, but I cringe everytime someone on "Judge Judy" mentions that theirs is a pitti.  She even told one family that they should be shot (the parents) for allowing their child to be in the same house with a pit!!  She loudly promotes the idea of the blind range and locking jaws of these beasts...  *sigh*

So people still choose to believe the myth of the 'locking jaws' eh? For goodness sake, the jaws of a APBT ARE strong but they don't lock. What a silly idea, along with all of the other silly 'ideas' spread about Pitbulls and other breeds.

Truth be told, I've been bit by more cocky little rat terriers, and the like that have the spastic personalities, the only difference? When a small dog bites, there is little to no damage, but on the rare occasion that a bigger dog bites, the damage is usually apparent. It amazes me that people don't take small breed bite rates into consideration because of lack of apparent damage, yet a bite is a bite! 

As a past Pitbull owner, it angers and saddens me that I used to have to lie to not only insurance companies but people who used to see my pitbull and I walking down the street, but as an owner, we do what we must to protect our babies. And that's what a majority of them are; big babies.

My pitbull was the biggest candy a$$ I've ever owned. But there's always gotta be one that has a $hity temperament to ruin it for the great ones. *sigh*
