wow, that is beyond ridiculous. If you watch the video, it wasn't just a small piece of ear either, it was almost the whole ear. And the tip of a tail?! One of my GSDs got the tip of it's tail accidentally amputated when a screen door snapped shut on it. My poor dog was in so much pain and the blood was spraying everywhere, took him to the vet's to get it cauterized and stitched (now you can't even tell that the tip is missing, less than half an inch of skin/flesh from the tip had been taken.)
I've worked with several different professional groomers in the past, and I used to do the show grooming at a breeding/show kennel where I worked, I also did a ton of grooming at a boarding kennel/Collie rescue kennel plus grooming at other kennels I've worked at.
To cut off a piece of a dog while grooming is absurd, whoever does that isn't a groomer, they are extremely incompetant and callous.
Petco should fire the groomer(s), fired the management that oversaw this groomer(s) and fire the person who hired them. Then the groomer(s) ought to be charged with animal cruelty too.

Really? How many holes has this story? Supposingly her baby, but noticed it an entire two days later that the ear got cut off? Wouldnt you have your hand all day long on that cute little fluffy head?
Just doesnt sound right. Would be interesting to hear the other side of the story.
Sadly people try to sue in this economy over anything and everything to get some easy money. I see it in Healthcare all the time. Most of them ending up as settlement just for costumer satisfaction, doesnt matter if there was wrong doing on the health care providers site.

My mom's Shih Tzu as a pup had a horrible experience at a local groomer that came highly recommended, guess they forgot to mention he would drink and then try to groom. Poor Odie had a puncture on his face from the scissors very close to his right eye and a deep cut from the shaver on his penis. Thank goodness no permanent damage but Odie has major issues with grooming. My mom has finally found a decent groomer. There seems to be little oversight down in this part of Florida. She had a great groomer that retired due to hand injury so we had to find another groomer and after 3 groomers, found her current one. We had the horrible first experience, then another groomer must have ripped a mat out since he had a raw spot where skin was missing (fur never did grow back right), had eye infection from something at another groomer and the 3rd caused major impacted anal glands. Thank goodness this one is willing to work with him and he doesn't wig out going there, in fact he is happy to see her. As for the idiots at Petco, OMG doesn't begin to cover it.....poor dog

Ha I agree with Elkoor! How do you not notice that your dog's ear is glued on?!
by triodegirl on 18 February 2012 - 03:02
I was wondering the same thing. Why did it take the owner 2 days to notice?

by Dawulf on 18 February 2012 - 03:02
When I was little (like 3 or 4...) we had a toy poodle named Gracie. I obviously don't remember much about it, because I was so young (all I really remember about Gracie was that she was mean as hell). But one time dad took her to get groomed once, and apparently they clipped her eye and never said anything. I guess it got infected or something, because one day she let out a yelp, leaned forward and her EYEBALL FELL OUT. We never could find that groomer again - they disappeared.
I agree, this is just insane. Groomer should be fired, sued and charged for animal cruelty. But it surprises me that it did take the owner so long to notice... must've been a good glue job. Poor dog.

I didnt see a photo where I saw any damage to the ear? I just saw one showing the inner ear and I didnt see anywhere it was cut. The dog also looked normal in the video, the ear wasnt even shaved, which I think wold have been done if there had been a significant enough injury to warrent a lawsuit.

Weird this is a "new" news item. A similar incedent happened back in 2001 in Washington state. A dog (same photo used) had it's ear glued back on. At the time there was lobbying for standardized grooming in the industry so we all rushed out to get out Master Groomer status. Of course nothing came of it.
ILGSD's is correct the dog would have a shaved ear and head for that type of injury.
One thing people do not understand is that most injuries on dogs are due to the dog being very very naughty for grooming. Groomers rarely (it does happen) injure dogs that are well behaved for grooming. The dogs who are injured are typically dogs who are brought in very very matted and because they are only groomed around 3-4 times per year it is the removal of the mats that injures the dogs. The groomer removes the matting and there are all types of wounds under the mats. Typical reaction from the pet parent is "THE GROOMER DID IT'!!!! Mats can actually pull at the skin causing it to rip. These rips are then exposed when the dog is shaved off.
Groomers do cause clipper burn, ear nicks and injury around the eye area. Injuries to shihtzus are the highest in this area due to a short nose. Those are the most common injuries I have witness in the past 27 years.
Groomers also do not cause anal impaction.( you have no idea how many times I have heard this) This is typically a breed thing seen in cockers, shih tzus and smaller poodles. (and crosses there of)
I dont think people understand how hard it is to clip a dog who is trying to take your arm off. They thrash like alligators and it is very hard on the dog and the groomer. I had on lady say "isn't it your JOB to get bitten?" umm NO it is your job to make sure your dog is in for grooming every 6 weeks, to brush it DAILY and to train it at home to behave. People say really stupid stuff to groomers "can't you just put a muzzle on him?" O really i cant even get within 5 feet of precious so how exactly do i get a muzzle on her? I have started getting owners to stay for naughty pooches. After they get chewed on, peed on and anals squirted at them. There is a much healther respect for what I do. What can I say, I'm EVIL :)
If the groomer did cut the ear off these chain stores often have a vet in the building. The groomer would have just taken it over there as it is required in the store policy. They make sure injuries are tended to immediately as big box stores often get sued. I be thinking this story, like the one in 2001 was bunk.
