Los Angeles (CNN) -- Legendary pop singer Whitney Houston died at a Beverly Hills, California, hotel at age 48, officials said Saturday night.

The entertainer was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. (6:55 p.m. ET) at the Beverly Hilton Hotel despite resuscitation efforts, a police spokesman said

Beverly Hills Police Lt. Mark Rosen said there were "no obvious signs of criminal intent" and that the cause of her death is being investigated.

Houston died on the eve of the 54th annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.

According to her official website, Houston, who struggled with addiction problems over the years, sold more than 170 million albums, singles and videos over her career.

She will be sadly missed by many. She has to be one of the music world's greatest female singers of all time.  

I too was hoping for a comeback.  May she Rest In Peace now.

So so sad, she was a troubled soul, R.I.P. my dear.

Somewhat tragic; all that talent, fame and money. I have always wondered why so many of the greatest artists have passed on so young. I suppose it could be that upon the exhaustion of all of one's hopes, dreams, desires, and whimsy, the exposed reality of an empty, utterly purposeless existence is overwhelming. On another note, when "regularly scheduled programming" was interrupted last night during what I think was primetime in the east, I had to wonder why this womans life was so much more significant than those of the Sudanese, Syrian, Somalians, etc., that I needed to be informed immediately.

Another lost soul.....

I imagine the loneliness at the top.  How does a superstar really know who is a friend?  Very sad and too common with great artists. The creative brain never stops. I think, the commoness of self-medication halts the demon thoughts; no thoughts equals no pain. I think this was a tragic accident. 

Tragedy, but think about all of the men and women killed serving their country in the military.  The media does very little to honor them but goes over board when a celebrity dies of drug/alcohol over-dose.  

I don't think that is relevant, to tell the truth. It also happened to coincide with the Grammy's making her tragedy especially timely and media worthy. 

I certainly have observed the media honoring our military men and women, with every death in my little state. The flags are always at half mast, as is their rightful honor. Whitney the artist has touched, and will continue to touch the hearts and souls of millions even beyond her death. It doesn't demean the sacrifice of others, to observe her tragic, early passing. IMHO   

GGturner, Our local media does also acknowledge our service persons & their families sacrifice in a dignified & graceful fashion. I am thankful that they are not subjected to the sensationalism & speculation & disrespect that is part & parcel for any pop icon that passes away.
Whitney was a very gifted vocalist from a family of very talented people, Dionne Warwick was her aunt, I believe, & Aretha Franklin was her Godmother. These are people very accustomed to the limelight, & yet Whitney's troubles were able to overcome her. I guess it shows you that all the money & all the fame & famous family means nothing in the end, if you do not have that something to hold on to. What is it? Is it strength? Faith? Friendship? Love? Confidence?

The media does not spend days commenting on those who sacrificed for others including fallen soldiers , firemen, police officers, etc.   In my opinion, sacrifice for your fellow man is more worthy than acting abilities or vocal talent.  We don't have nationally televised memorial services or funerals for those individuals (soldiers, police officers).   Celebrities have their place in our lives, but the media takes it to the extreme when one of them passes away.
