They are supposedly having a feature on dogs being used to detect cancer in their owners. Sounds interesting! jackie harris

What time?

Kalibeck

Here on the east coast it was on at 6:30pm, & I got it wrong, the feature was about how dogs with cancer are being treated with human protocols & chemo/radiation because dogs serve as an accelerated model of how the treatment might succeed in humans. The story used a little girl named Peyton & her family dog Dutch who were both diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, & who are both being treated at the same cancer center, presumably with the same protocols. Both are doing well, Peyton calls Dutch her "Cancer buddy." Dutch had been given 6 weeks to live, & has so far survived 6 months. That dogs serve so well for human treatment models earned the dogs Hero status. That was pretty much it.
I was hoping for a couple other things. I personally know of three persons who had their dogs alert them of areas on their bodies that later were diagnosed as cancerous; 2 with melanomas & 1 lady with thyroid cancer whose GSD would try to lick or scratch at the base of her throat relentlessly. I was hoping for some acknowledgement of those situations.
And once I learned of the identical diagnosis of the little girl & her dog, I wondered if they would entertain any theories on how that happens, & the frequency of that same cancer type diagnosis of human & canine within the same household. That seems odd, to say the least.
Anyway, hope somebody else caught it?

Ronin has done that, detected cancer in my friend, a neighbor having a heart attack well before the symptoms sent him to the ER, a small girl in class before she had her seizure, and our friend's low blood sugar.  My surgeon friend used to have him sniff knees and shoulders before surgery even if the bloodwork came back negative for any infection and he was right every single time

Yes they certainly know better than we do ourselves what's going on inside us!

I was hoping that the ABC clip would shed some light on this, but it was really not what I expected. Oh well.

Ronin sounds like a very special dog.

He is Jackie, an amazing freak of nature as I call him (affectionately).  He was horribly abused when we got him, took months and months to get him to understand it was ok to play, we (Loki included) had to teach him how to play but once he got the hang of it, OMG hahahaha.  He is an incredible search dog, ADHD on everything else until you put him on a scent, then talk about focus.....he detected the returning cancer in my friend before the tests did.  They were able to get it early.  We now have a pup from Ronin's sister from a later litter but same parents, showing the same awesome (and annoying) characteristics at 16 weeks, really uncanny.....

Mindhunt, that's so cool that you have a youngster with the same talents. I had so hoped that one of Kali's pups would have her abilities, but they were a bunch of goof-balls....nice dogs, but not that serious. None of them seem to be able to alert to anything medical, although several of them are good at tracking. They just don't have her deep nose.
I'm having a heck of a time getting my computer to function lately, so if I disappear for a while that's why.

Jax the pup is showing many of the same traits that Ronin has including those annoying "making own entertainment" type behaviors such as opening cupboard doors to see what is inside and air scenting lamb chops from an entirely different part of the house.   Both exciting and annoying lol

Sorry yours didn't turn out quite like you hoped Jackie, we got extremely lucky with these two.  Hubby has decided to train Jax himself since I trained the other 3.  Hardest thing in the world is keeping my mouth shut and not offer "advice" :p
