Sunsilver

by Sunsilver on 08 February 2012 - 16:02

Recently, I found out my female GSd is allergic to chicken. I switched her to a fish-based food, and most of her scratching stopped. However, the skin around her mouth and anus is still really itchy and red, and I think I know why. The main fat source in the new food is....you guessed it!....chicken and turkey fat!

Anyone know of a food that is completely chicken free?

I swear by Flint River Ranch Trout and Sweet Potato, their food is made entirely in the USA, I copied this directly from my bag.  My oldest and youngest have chicken allergies so this is what worked best for them and kept them in great shape for working.

I like the Great Life grain-free and potato-free foods. Their protein sources don't have "mixes" that I have seen. I think the buffalo would be worth a try.

sunsilver, i have one that cannot eat chicken either----not even raw.  i've had the best luck with fish formulas & like you, found that the chicken fat also causes problems.  infact, i have found chicken formulas to be at the root of most of the diarrhea problems in the other dogs, so i avoid chicken for the most part.  its getting harder and harder to find good dog food and even worse for those with allergic problems.  :(

One of my girls is allergic to chicken as well.  I use GO! Natural Sensitivity + Shine Salmon Formula.  It is manufactured in Canada, using Canadian grown/raised products.  It does not have any chicken in the formula.

Willow loves the food and her coat just shines and her scratching is much less; before I switched her food she had scratched herself bloody on her shoulder.  I feed a little more than the bag recommends because she always seems a little to thin when she only gets the suggested amount.

2 of my 4 will do that (itch like crazy) if there are ANY type of flax in the food, seeds or oil both have the itchy results.  Just info for you.  Nan

Nature's Domain salmon and sweet potato from Costco (grain free) is what we feed.  Pretty good food.

I have read that Nature's Variety Limited Ingredient which is grain and potato free is really good.
