I have two German Shepherds and a 1600 SQ foot home. I have never had fleas before on either of them. Now they're covered. I wasnt using any medication on them but immedietely applied Frontline. 3 days later we bathed both in a strong flea shampoo. Now its been a week and the fleas are still on them. We cleaned all there beds and vacuumed the house and cleaned the sofas, etc.
Do we need to bomb the house?
If you have an infestation it can take a little work and time to get rid of them. Have you tried something like DE (Diatameous Earth) in the carpets? That helps to kill any fleas that are hiding in the carpets. I would put the DE in the corners, cracks, work it into the carpet, under the bed/couch, etc... let it sit for awhile before you vacuum it up.
You do not need a flea shampoo, a regular shampoo/bath will kill the fleas. Use a flea comb to make sure you get all of the fleas off of them. Vacuum every day for awhile to help get them out of the house. I use a lemon spray to help repell fleas also (boil water with thinly sliced lemons, then let it sit overnight covered - strain into a spray bottle in the morning). There are also a lot of other more "natural" things that you can use.
Good luck!
Bomb the house every few days for a week or so - that should really help.
I live in the southeast and frontline does not kill the fleas here. You can also try treating your yard in addition to your house. Just make sure whatever you use is safe for your dogs.
I dont have advise on the flea infestation; but Comfortis or Advantix have worked great for monthly flea control for the dogs.
We had a first time flea infestation last fall, it didn't seem like the frontline I used was working, but after 4 months now we are flea free again, phewww! It took some time, some attention to the detail cleaning, & a little patience, but eventually I guess we worked our way to all life stages of flea & killed 'em! Thank goodness! My dogs developed an allergic reaction to the flea bites (fleabite dermatitis) & were totally miserable! We went through a ton of Benadryl! We also wormed, & heartworm checked & made sure we were current on that too, just in case. We've never tested positive for heartworm or other parasites, but figured if there was a first time for fleas....well, maybe for the others also. I blame this mild weather & no snow or hard freeze. All kinds of icky stuff left alive to propagate!

Todd, Home Depot has a bomb set for fleas comes in multiple cans to release inside the home. You have to empty the house when you set them off, do all floors and remove all occupants & dogs for 2 hour period. The same time day you are bombing dip the dogs with anti flea dip and gently dry. In addition you can use a spray indoors also. Most vets carry a 1 per day pill to orally give dogs which you can give for 3 days this kills all live fleas on dogs. After all clear then use Frontline or Advantix, hope this helps. VB
My vet said this year has been especially horrible for fleas. Down here in Florida, we count on those cold winter days to kill the fleas and we didn't get that, from fall right to spring without a winter inbetween. My dogs have developed a flea allergy that is horrible. I am getting the DE (I can't remember who sent me the link to a supplier but THANK YOU) and I have them on Trifexis. My vet said the fleas seem to have developed a tolerance to Frontline and Advantix along with a few others so you may not see any change or if you do, it is little change and doesn't last. My dogs even had 3 bouts of tapeworm from infected fleas in 7 months which they have NEVER had tapeworms before. I feel for the dogs this year.
20 Mule Team Borax (in the laundry aisle at Walmart) mixed 50/50 with regular table salt
sprinkle on carpets, upholstry, can vacuum after day or two
I leave longer
the Borax kills adult fleas/ salt dry out kills the eggs
& Really Works!!
I use DE, or Adams Spray on dog
This year, after weather warms, I am going to use nematodes for the yard :)
Pretty sure you are not supposed to bathe the dogs after applying frontline. I could be wrong. Borax all along the walls where the carpet meets, vaccuum the rug like there is something wrong with you.
Before the frontline type products, we put lamps over pie tins with soapy water and caught them, borax all over the place, flea dips, sevin dust. Man, I do not miss those days at all.
The neighbors moved out, and of course, left their stupid flea filled cat. He came over, so I put some of the flea stuff we had on him. Vet said that it would probably kill him, he is right as rain at the other neighbors place.
Good luck with those stupid stupid fleas.
