Hello I have an 11week old Malinois pup I have been feeding raw to. Sunday I had to bring him to the emergency vet due to an abcess in his mouth they believed was caused by a puncture from eating raw meaty bones. I do not want to give up on a raw diet for him so I am looking for adivce suggestions anything to avoid this happening again. Thank you!

I have been feeding raw for 7 years and to many puppies. I have never had a problem. Yours is isolated.

Maybe i will just keep doing what i was doing and hope it doesnt happen again and if it does then ill look into other options. The "prepared" raw diets are so expensive, and i really like the idea of him being able to eat the whole unprocessed unaltered peice of meat.

thank you!

Just a thought-

I have a GSD pup this age and I have to closely monitor him 24/7 since he's always trying to shove everything in his mouth. How do you know the cut in his mouth wasn't caused by him picking up a pointy stick or a pen or .......?

I agree with Laura... I am guessing it could have been anything!  Puppies put everything in their mouths and will chew on anything.  Could have been a stick in the yard? or whatever else?

I have been feeding raw for almost 14 years and never had a problem like that.  I have raised 5 litters on a raw diet.  With that being said, I believe that it is possible, raw is not without its risks.  ANYTHING you feed has "risks" or a downside, including kibble!

I know many people who feed chicken leg quarters with no problems at all, but for me personally, I do not feel comfortable feeding the leg bones.  I have fed them in the past and probably would if I ended up with some now, but I try to stay away from them... What type of bones are you feeding the pup?  If you are feeding chicken I like the backs best as there are no "weight bearing" bones.

I have also found that when you go into the vet with a problem - no matter what the problem is - if you tell them you feed raw THAT will be the cause!  Even if the reason you are there has absolutely nothing to do with the way you feed.

Good luck, I understand your concern for not wanting this to happen again!  If it were my puppy, I would continue to feed raw, but I would stay away from leg quarters/leg bones... I would also watch extra close as to what he puts in his mouth.

Thank you everyone for the responses! to laura, he does try to eat everything so it wouldnt suprise me if it was something else that poked his mouth i was just saying thats what the vet said it was. and to GSD i am having trouble finding chicken backs in my area. I just emailed a raw dealer in my area so hopefully ill get a better selection of stuff with her.

thank you all! any other advice would be appreciated!

I agree with Laura too. The abcess could have been caused by a bone or.....just about anything with a puppy LOL. Impossible to say what the cause was!
