To get started, find a club in your area. If there are multiple clubs in your area, go visit them and see which one is a good fit for you. Here is a link to USMRA's club list.

Talk to the training director and decide if a pup or young dog is what suits you best. I prefer a dog with no training, so that the foundation for ringsport can be started from the beginning. My current dog is a convert from other sports, and he has some limitations because of his foundation training. So either a puppy or a young dog could work well.
Best of luck. Mondio is a lot of fun.

Yes - I have only just begun - I would suggest a young dog also, but depending on what you have you may want to work with what you have (if you can) so you can learn. I have some advantages and some disadvantages when it comes to my participation in Mondio.
Advantage - my husband is a certified level 2 trial decoy & I live very close to a great club
Disadvantage - I'm working an adult female GSD with primarily a Schutzhund foundation and I will NEVER own a Mal
So I also know I have some limitations in the sport but I enjoy it - planning to enter her for a Brevet this June
