(Reuters) - Minnesota officials on Thursday outlined plans to permit a hunting season for the gray wolf this year following its removal from federal endangered species protections, prompting opponents of the plan to consider a court challenge.

Minnesota is home to the largest population of gray wolves in the lower 48 states, about 2,900, and could become the first upper Midwest state to set a hunting season for the animals as they are stripped of federal protections.

Federal officials have withdrawn safeguards under the Endangered Species Act effective Friday, allowing states to decide whether or not to allow the gray wolf to be hunted.

First let me say that the DNR is purely political and could stand some budget cuts.
Next, if numbers are at a point where limited hunting would be possible I would hunt them, but I would oppose any attempt to allow trapping.
This would not include Federal lands, only state owned or private property.
It's a state issue in my opinion in regards to private or state lands.

You got it there - its not a federal issue - too much federal control in every breathe we take.

My naturalist brothers are infuriated by this law; the wolves are hardly ever seen and they certainly don't cause any trouble (not yet anyway).  If they began to be a problem, fine, thin them out, but definately not by trapping.  I see this hunt in the same way I see the people who want to eradicate pit bulls and German shepherds.

I really hate sport hunting and I think anyone who traps is too lazy to do the work.  If you are going to eat what you kill and it will feed your family then I am ok with hunting for food, but if you are doing it for the prestige of "bagging" a wolf or any other animal to put on your wall or floor, well shame on you, there are other ways to prove your testicle size (and this goes for women as well).  My husband has a friend that is a member of the Safari Club and when he and his group will spend tens of thousands on a trophy hunt for exotic animals or the "big 5", OMG don't even get me started.
