I just purchased a gorgeous black GSD for breeding, on his 8 week and 12 week vet check papers that I recieved with him, he had 2 testes, at 4 months my vet only felt one but I thought the other was just hiding...he just turned 6months and still not apparent, my vet was quick to diagnosis and recommended I send him back at 14 weeks but I wanted to give him a chance, now 6 months still not, should I cut my losses or give him another couple of months. And is he a true crypt cause he had them at 8 and 12 weeks?
Input is much appreciated.

One down is monorchid;  none down is cryptochid.

Is this a genetic fault though since he had them when he was younger?

Well it is hard to say, since you say they WERE there in all probability the tendency to go up and down can be caused by many factors, harmonal problems, STRESS, fear, etc. however, the problem of monorchid/cryptorchid is definitely genetic; some lineages have a lot of it some have very little.  This is something you want to know about before you buy your puppy.  The going up and down can be a health issue, and as your vet stated I would probably return him to the breeder since you do want to use him for showing/breeding.

In his current status of none down, he is a pet;  I would in all probability feel they will not come down at this late age.  I was told by one breeder that if they are not down by 9-10 weeks, especially monorchids that it would probably not come down.  However, I do know others that have had them come down on an older puppy.  Best of luck  Nan

I would check with a reproductive specialist as they may be able to give him  a shot or something to make them come down since they were there or maybe even ultrasould to see where they might be at this point?  Just a thought, it sounds like he is a nice boy and could very well be worth a trip to another vet.  BOL  Nan

I've heard of them coming down as late as 10 months old. Still some time.
