Hello,
We are loking into the grain free dry dog food.  Is there one brand that is better than the rest?  In the past when we showed we fed raw.  I really liked the way my dogs coats and weight were on the raw diet.  However now do to time issues and freezer space we are feeding a dry kibble.  Our Germand Shepherd has  anice coat however could use a little more weight on him.  We currently fee fromms Four Star Salmon.  Have been hearing a lot of good concerning the grain free dry diets.  Can anyone comment on them, both good and bad?

We feed Natures Variety grain free formulas, as well as Before Grain,
and sometimes Earthborn Naturals, we also feed K9 Kraving raw,
Natures Variety Raw and locally purchased proteins etc.

Dogs look great, never any vet visits for skin/coat etc.
Bloodwork on one senior comes back great every 6-8 mos.

2 younger dogs (one adult one pup) work hard,
training 6-7 days per week in 2 phases, bitework 2-3 times a week.

Senior sits on his ass and does nothing anymore but be catered to.
Lucky bastard.

Costco has one - Nature's Domain that I feed my dog. The "flavor" she was on was pretty inexpensive - 28.99 I think for a big bag. Last time I went to get her food though, they didn't have that kind anymore (not sure if they quit selling it or if they were just out at the time) so I got another "flavor" - Salmon and Sweet Potato, I think it is, and she really likes it. But, it is a little more expensive ($36-ish, can't remember exactly), and it gives her gas.

Otherwise, she is healthy and has a nice coat.

try this website... http://www.dog-nutrition-advice.com/top-10-dog-foods.html Dr. Schonbeck is great...understands nutrition and the GSD.  I use Acana Ranchlands with no issues, stool is perfect.

I feed TOTW with raw venison or Hamburg mixed in.  Mine do really well on that.
So, I'll stick with that until I see otherwise.  They always have great check ups too.

I feed TOTW right now... but was thinking of trying the Natures Domain after I use up my last bag of the TOTW.

We dont have a Costco close to us.  Live in central Wisconsin.  Our local feed store does carry  NutroSource grain free.  It is $46.00 for 30 pounds. However in the past my dogs have not done well on the regular chicken and rice NutriSource brand.  I have noticed with the Fromms Salmon our dogsss do have morre gas problems.  Their stools are fine however I feel for the kids who sit in the back of the mini van with the dogs on the way to park or petstore, lol.  I have seen TOTW at the pet store.  I did like the ingrediants they had listed.   Will look for the Natures  Variety at Petco also.  Do most of the grain free brands use peas as the third or fourth ingrediant?

When you add in hamburger or venison do you also add and bone meal to help balance out the raw meat?  When we used to feed add ground turkey or hamburger the trainer at our club had us adding bone meal as well to it all out.  Since we have been out of the ring and clubs for awhile and stopped the raw diet I have forgotten what the recipe was.  We also used to feed turkey or chicken necks.

Thank you for the link Turk.  I will be checking it out tonight.  Any all all info is greatly appreciated!

I like to keep away from potatoes, if possible (sweet potatoes are fine). I feed one dog this: http://www.doctorsfinest.com/Grain_Free_Chicken_Dog_Food_p/gfcd.htm  in addition to The Honest Kitchen Embark and various raw meats/bones. He is hard to keep weight on and feeding just raw means I'm feeding a whole chicken per day...which gets pricey;-)
