So, this isn't for me, it's actually for someone that works with a family member of mine. I'm in need of suggestions for a breed that..... Will be somewhat of a medium size (not over 40 lbs preferably), can tolorate doing stuff outside in the cold, and is not bad on allergies (I know that no dog is really "hypoallergenic" completely, but they prefer something not bad on allergies because of the children).

How about the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier?

Standard Poodle. They don't shed and some from retrieving lines actually have some drive :-)

Are they dog people? Or is this a first dog? Standard poodles are fantastic "first" dogs. Wheatons are great as well a fun goofy breed but they are the highest maintenance in grooming coming in second only to the labradoodle. ( yep Standard Poodles are easier to maintain the the previous 2.)Wheatons, doodles and Standards can all be shaved off 4 times a year if grooming is a problem. For families that want a dog with some P and V. I love Cairn terriers and Westies. They are a little less feisty than some other terrier breeds. They do well in the snow and are fantastic family dogs . They shed a bit but not a horrid amount. Avoid spaniels unless they are a super active family. Great dogs in the right home but potential for hyperactivity and genetic issues. Cocker or Springer rage being the most common.

beetree, I'll look up that breed since I'm not familiar with it.
Dobermannman, I'll see what they think about them as well.
They'll be paying me to do obedience training for the dog....or puppy...... They would prefer a puppy, but I personally think they'll do better with a young adult having kids........We'll see though...
Byrnjulf, I'm not sure if they've had dogs in the past. I'll find out more tomorrow, and I'll be talking to them soon myself as well. I'm just going off what my sister told earlier today on the phone. The family has five kids, so I know they're not wanting something hectic....Which is why I think they should get a well mannered young adult.
Basically I've talked to my sister, who has talked to the wife/mom that works with her. So I'll find out more tomorrow.

I love standard poodles and strongly considered buying one before I bought Senta (my GSD). My husband is German and thinks that the GSD is the only dog breed that exists. :)
A good friend of mine has two Portuguese Water Dogs and loves them (coats are kept in the working retriever cut). They are around 40 to 55 lbs and are very smart. They are a working breed so they need exercise and obedience training to work their minds - very similar to a GSD's needs from what I've seen.

I told my husband that Standard Poodles are believed to have originated as retrievers in Germany but he didn't believe me. GSDs have German in their name so obviously they are better. :)
brynjulf- How about an update on my all time favourite PDB thread? I still read this thread when I'm having a bad day. It is never not funny!
