canine herpes virus infects whelping bitches and the pups die within 2-7 days of birth as they pick up the virus from the vaginal tract when the dam gives birth to them. It is sometimes confused with puppy fading syndrome. It is said that the virus is resistant to cold temperatures and very sensitive to temperatures above 37 deg C. It is recommended that the puppies are kept in a room where the temperature is 37deg so that they survive.
While this is understood I would like to know your experiences and whether there is any anti-biotic that can be administered to kill this virus. Whom do we administer - the puppies or the dam.
Your comments are anxiously awaited.

im a veterinary nurse from the uk. At our practice we have seen a few bitches that have had canine herpes and as you say the pups have all died within 7 days. So now those bitches have been vaccinated against it. It is two injections and the manufacture of this product is merial 2 bitches one cocker spaniel and 1 labrador have had the vaccinations and have both had litters after and all pups have survived.
Hope this helps

Antibiotics are not efficacious for viral infections. As noted by two posters, there are anti-viral vaccines, but that is the only potential remedy short of testing to make sure a dog does not have herpes before breeding.

Based on a Seminar that I recently attended the canine herpes virus is only a problem if the bitch contracts the virus during the pregnacy. If the bitch has had the virus prior to becoming pregnant she will have antibodies and pass them on the to the pups and the pups are protected.

Mathaus,Herpes Virus is going to become a big problem in the U S and every where else.I don't think people relize. I've had all my males and females check, and the results where all negitive. The reason I did this is because someone I know bought an older female from a big breeder in the states. He wanted to breed this female to my male. After he camd to me with this female, and I introduced her to my male . He informed me she had Herpes. (Wonderful). So after I went nuts, I sent him packing. Now comes the problem. I never bred her, but she was around my male, and he was licking her and so on. Herpes is very contagius. So now everyone gets checked. So I contacted a vet in Canada who specializes in Herpes. He told me to send him blood samples from all my dogs. He would check for Herpes and then send me the report. Thank god everyone was negitive. Since, I found out that the old owner of the female new she had Herpes. Bred some top males to this female here in the states, some his own.Now , I won't say but this one top male has since been retirerd.Everyone should check for herpes in there dogs . You will be very surprised how many dogs are infected. and not just here in the states. And once they get herpes , they have it for life! there is no cure.I'll responed later with the info on the vet.Herpes is the cause of a lot of puppies dying in the first week or so. With out the breeders even knowing why.So people please take this sieriously. And have your dogs checked.

Canine Herpes Virus?
This should be a valuable lesson for German Shepherds to not sleep around. At least use protection.

I understood from my vet that a negative from the herpes test in not conclusive. A positive is a positive, but it is possible to have a false negative. Anybody heard about this? We routinely vaccinate all our bitches after mating.

Jeni,
what seminar did you attend? Is there a website to substantiate that the CHV is only a problem if acquired during pregnancy?
Thanks, Chris

website www.canineherpes.com is quite useful - otherwise just google canine herpes and lots come up. Videx has a good article on their web site
