Has anyone on here shipped a puppy to Australia from the states? If so, shoot me a PM, I have a few questions.

by Iwona on 15 November 2011 - 03:11

I think shipping to Australia is almost the same as shipping to England which means they have to be quaranteen for 6 months???

Hi GSDguy, we have a forum down here www.DOGZONLINE.com. Many folks here have brought dogs out from the states, why don't you post there I am sure that you will receive some great info, it's a great forum for owners of pure breed dogs.
You might even be a regular poster once you have visited.

See you DOWN UNDER.

Hm,big job,see Aqis and you will see how it works, rnat test, quarantine station, vacination against rabies ,and you must be carefull ,dont vaccinated your puppy against leptospirose,if have you already done you will have problems with blood tests.Any way it can be done.

by Saffioraire on 15 November 2011 - 13:11

Quarantine is for 30 days usually.
Rabies vaccination done at 3 months of age, a blood test is done one month after this vaccination. The dog cannot enter "Australian public land" (quarantine stations excluded) until after 180 days from the day the blood test sample was TAKEN. Ideally the pup will fly around 150 days after the blood sample was taken spending the minimum of 30 days in quarantine = 180 days. There are blood tests required to be taken 20-30 days before the flight, however if there are any discrepancies in the results you usually have enough time to re-do them and you can also get an extension on your flight and permit date. AQIS rules are strict but if you work with them you will find they can be flexible so that if something goes wrong you are not ruined.

There are some other minor requirements but these are the ones most people worry about.
If you have any questions you can PM me and I can send you links. I have imported 2 dogs into Australia now and I will be surely importing more in the future.

Kind Regards

Edited to Add: Imported dogs from Europe. But requirements of all Category 4 countries are the same unless otherwise stated.

Thanks everyone.  So Saffioraire, basically.......you're saying that the dog won't even be able to go there for about half a year after the blood test?  My litter isn't even here yet, but someone from Australia was wanting one.  I have more to find out about the person inquiring, regardless, but I think I would be better off not shipping to Australia considering how long it will all take.  I don't mind holding a puppy, or keeping one back for a while to train for that matter.....but I think I'll save myself the trouble/complications and not ship there.

We were the vet for 2 dogs going from the US to Austrailia fairly recently. It is a long process and does take about six months to prepare. The biggest reason for the length of the dogs stay in the US is to reduce to quarantine time in Austrailia, (which is very expensive). The above mentioned Aqis site details it quite well. The various laboratory tests, and veterinary requirements added up to about $1000-$1200 a dog in vet costs alone.
