Hi, i just want to have some advice regarding our german sheperd dog, he is 6 months old and currently under going obedience training and drive development for personal protection, according to our trainer he has a very good strong prey drive. Our concern is this, our dog is off leashed inside the house with my kids however the dog is mad to my youngest kid and it sems everytime he sees my son he is ready to snad as if my son is a stranger inside our house, will this aggression to a single person be corrected without affecting the dogs prey drive? I am not familiar with most of the lines of german sheperds working or show line here is the link of our dogs pedigree kindly tell me your honest opinion wheter he is more on the working line or show line.

He's a show line.....I'm not going to say what I think of show lines just because I would start a war on here.  What do you mean he's ready to "snad" at your youngest? What all does your dog do?  And what do you do when your dog does that? I'm also curious as to how your youngest child acts towards the dog?

T
hanks for the reply, what i mean was SNAP/Bite, well my youngest is scared of dogs and he always panic once the dog is looking at him, we try to correct him by saying NO and giving him a simple jerk, well the dog is ok wiith the other members of the family he barks on strangers outside our gate and mostly plays with my grand daughter. i have a little experience with german sheperd since my son has a kennel of english bulldogs we decided to extend it with this breed on a purpose of having our own protection/companion dog. any opinions about what you where about to tell regarding show lines? ( you can email me at rickycifra@gis.ae)

Thanks

He needs to be Yanked and cranked when this happens, and this should have been done the FIRST Time it occured.
Sorry if this offends some of the Modern day Trainers.I believe in investing alot of patience and Love with a Dog and I keep them for their lifetime, but This must be done with some dogs.

Gsdguy08, a type of German Shepherd doesn't describe all, you started already, tell me where and when and I will show up with my dogs to see if your working lines will measure up...................Sorry,Ricky, I will be very careful who I listen to here for advice; a good dog, or a dog with a great temperament, should never, under no circumstances try to bite a family member, much less a child. " what is the child doing to the dog"? This is an excuse used by the people that own out of control and bad temperament dogs, working and show lines alike...there can be 2 issues here 1. Bad dog, poor temperament 2. Bad trainer, poorly training the dog .........sorry,Rick,get rid of the dog, family comes first. Good luck

jdiaz1791 thanks for your advice, i am just really wondering why our dog is mad to 1 particular person in the house only, his temperament to other members of the family is ok, isn't it my son is showing that he is intimidated with the dog that's why the dog is aggressive to him? i forgot to mention the dog is only 5 to 6 months old and it was with us for a month already and the trainer handled th dog for just 2 days only, is there a chance that the aggression to my son be lessen as the training proccess goes on? or i might be havning a one of the issues you've mentioned.

Thanks

jdiaz1791 I'm just stating......in general I don't care for show lines.  There are a lot of reasons I would never get a show line...........I'm not denying that your dogs can't work, I don't deny that there are great show line dogs that can work.  I however will never get one........And you can't say there is anything wrong with personal preference now can you? We all like certain things and there is nothing wrong with that.  You told the other person to be careful who they take advice from?  Dog training whatever it be is always dog specific.....not "breed specific".  Obviously certain lines or breeds may exhibit certain traits....However,  I've worked with/trained numerous dogs of many, many different breeds, lines, etc.  So I think it's possible to offer advice regardless of what I like.

The thing is, if the dog has good temperament, he would NEVER do that no matter what. He is placing your son behind him, but a lot of people can tell you is your fault, is the trainer's fault, is your kid' s fault abusing him, but again the dog shouldn't act this way.....ok, my son is autistic, and on and off he will hit any of my Sch3 , males or females, and they just put their head down;I correct my son not to do this, but I never worry that any of my dogs will react like yours, if he did, he couldn't be bred, nor be with the family....sometimes I see good dogs that are poorly trained and they start reacting and behaving badly.....buy a better quality dog,it's my opinion,or keep him away from your family. Good luck

Gsdguy08, I understand your point, If you don't like them,it's ok, but not all show lines are the same, just like all working lines aren't; you should never generalized, and when you say " I'm not going to say what I think of show lines" you saying ALL are the same. If you are biased to some dogs, then your advice is flawed, but I didn't mean not to take your advice, I meant in general, as you know. The most badly bred and commercialized dog has been the show lines, hence the problems that you see today. The working lines,DDR's and Czech's were properly bred by the communists regimes and were only getting around just a few years ago, and that is the difference. Unfortunately, most people want to buy the cheapest dog they can from the poorest pedigree and then all over blame the German Shepherd or the Show lines.....trust me, down here, in South Florida, Miami, we have probably 2 of the greatest trainers, and they fill their mouth saying the same thing you implied, and when I take my show lines or some of the ones I had bred, then "wow, that's a show line! "...It's all about buying good quality dogs

Going to be a protection dog, companion
Child who is scared of dogs and panics when around them
dog snaps at this child
and you have very little experience in GSDs
I guess my first thought would be why would you get a dog if your child is so scared of dogs in the first place.  A child that is so scared and panics and a dog that nips is a perfect recipe for disaster.
