Hi All,

I have been looking into becoming a dog trainer. Do you have any suggestions on what school is a good choice vs other schools? Good, the bad, the ugly. You know. Looked into a few of them but wanted to get PERSONAL experience with them if possible.

Thanks!

I am a graduate of National K9 in Columbus Ohio. I looked at every school, and found many schools have too much "filler" in their programs, and not enough substance.  Often, at some of the schools, you end up paying them to be their kennel help. I graduated in 1998, and have worked with many trainers through the years who graduated from other schools. I highly recommend Nation K9. It is a great base, but it is just the beginning. You never stop learning, and there is no cookie cutter method to train a dog. You have to evaluate each new dog, and develope your training program to meet each dog's personality/problems. Never stop learning.....you may not agree 100% with a training method, but you can always get something out of it to put into your bag of tricks. JMO

I am not a professional trainer (just train and title my own dogs in about a dozen different things) but when I am looking for a trainer I'm mostly interested in their experience, not really where they were schooled.  Like if I'm going to start training for Rally Obedience I want to know how many dogs the trainer has trained and titled.  Also I like to use trainers that are well-versed in a variety of methods and techniques, many of these come through seminars so I like when a trainer can tell me they've gone to various seminars and what they learned from each one.

I went to the Tom Rose School in Missouri.  Learned a LOT there, lots of different training methods.  Learned to train pet dogs, competition dogs, police dogs, search and rescue dogs, and more.   I would also recomend Petroplis in Mo too, you will learn a lot of things there.
