Hello everyone,
This post is an expression of a very bad experience I recently had while attempting to purchase a Labrador puppy from a 'so-called' genuine breeder from Nashik. Well, it so happened that I have been wanting to have a dog since a while now and have been meeting up all sorts of breeders, dog lovers and checking out many labs in the last few months. I am a genuine dog lover, and I have been looking for a show quality Labrador Retriever puppy from a good pedigree and a genuine breeder. During this on-going search, I came across a breeder named Mahesh Kshemkalyani from Kalyani Kennel located in Nashik. My relation with Kalyani Kennel started when I found Mahesh Kshemkalyani’s phone number from dogsindia.com. I called him in the first week of September 2011 to find out if he had any pups available to which he replied positively. I was very happy on knowing that because most of the other breeders listed on dogsindia.com didn’t have a litter at that time. I had a feeling that the breeders listed in dogsindia.com were the reputed breeders (now I know that it’s not the case!). I had contacted many breeders in last couple of months including some well-known Lab breeders like Joshburg Kennel and Vidanes Kennel, and some backyard breeders as well. And then, concluded that Kalyani Kennel was the best option for me because the owner – Mahesh Kshemkalyani – sounded very genuine on the phone, and he answered all my questions satisfactorily. On top of that, he had told me that he had 2 puppies available for grabs!! The price was also reasonable. I know that many frauds are happening in this business of buying/selling dogs, so I was cautious from the beginning. I asked Mahesh Kshemkalyani to send me pictures of the puppies, the dam and the sire, pedigrees of the dam and the sire etc. He took 3 days in emailing all these things to me while reasoning out his busy schedule caused the delay. The pedigrees of the dam and the sire looked good. The sire was an import from Australia, and the dam was from an import bloodline. Pictures of two male puppies also looked good. When I told him on phone that I was interested in female pup and not male, he said he had sold a female pup from the same litter to someone, and he would find out if that buyer could return that female pup (like really, who does that?!!!? May be I should have guessed the reliability of this man then and there) He quoted me 20K as the price. But when I told him that I was budgeting only 15K, he said, “You can have the female pup for 15K, and a male pup for 17K”. He also mentioned that KCI member had visited and inspected the puppies, and he would be able to show the litter registration papers to me which he had sent to KCI. Now I realise that I should have been suspicious at that point itself because no genuine breeders negotiate the prices. Also, I should have been suspicious when he offered me a female puppy after knowing that I wanted a female and not male. He didn’t have a female pup until then! I was very excited to bring the puppy home, so didn’t really think about this simple thing! Mahesh Kshemkalyani offered that he could send the puppy to my address by air cargo, but I didn’t agree because I am against the idea of putting a young pup under the stress of flying unaccompanied. Also, I wanted to see the puppy for real before bringing it home. So I decided to visit Kalyani Kennel personally. I live in Bhavnagar (Gujarat), and Kalyani Kennel is located in Nashik. It’s a 15 hours’ drive to Nashik from where I live. I had already told Mahesh Kshemkalyani that I would reach his place at about 8:30 AM, would then select the puppy and drive back in about an hour so I could reach back home byby Aditya Joshi on 20 October 2011 - 12:10
mid-night. Mahesh had confirmed that all the 3 puppies (2 males, 1 female) were with him only at his home and that I would be able to see all of them when I would reach there. I reached Kalyani Kennel at 11 AM instead of 8:30 AM because of extremely bad road conditions. My parents, my wife and my 4 years old niece also accompanied me in the drive as they were also very excited about bringing the puppy home.
Now we had earlier clarified with this man on the phone that we would be late since the road conditions were extremely bad owing to monsoons. When we reached Mahesh Kshemkalyani’s home, only his father was available. I called Mahesh Kshemkalyani, and he said that he had to go to his office for some meeting, and he would be back to his home within half hour. We were happy to wait! To utilize the time, I asked Mahesh’s father if we could select the puppy before Mahesh came home. His father said, the puppies were not at home! After waiting for about an hour, someone named Amit brought 3 puppies. When I asked him if the puppies were his, he replied “I am Mahesh’s friend and we do this business together. I keep some puppies on a farm”. Mahesh had earlier told me on the phone that this was the first litter of the dam. But Amit told me that it was the second litter. But after knowing that Mahesh had told me something else, Amit started fumbling. We liked the female pup, so we selected it, and then again, started waiting for Mahesh Kshemkalyani to come home so we could finish the formalities and drive back. We also wanted to see the papers before finalizing anything.
As soon as we selected the female pup, Amit left and took both the male puppies along with him. It was already 12:30 PM by then! When I called Mahesh again, he apologized and said he would take another half hour because that meeting was going on still. Now, that was a Ganapati Visarjan day, and a Sunday (11 September 2011)! We all know that no offices work on this day in whole Maharashtra. But we thought, Mahesh might have some special meeting, so we should just wait for some more time. So we went for lunch. When we came back from lunch at 3 PM, Mahesh was still not at home!! When I called, he said he was still in that meeting. At that point, we started becoming suspicious because no meetings can go on for such a long time, that too without any lunch breaks! That too on Ganapati Visarjan day. But Mahesh said, “I will definitely be there within 45 minutes max”. So we thought, if we have waited this long, let’s wait for a little longer. There was no news of Mahesh even at 4:30 PM. So we told his father that we will have to leave now otherwise we will not reach Bhavnagar till morning, and we all had work on Monday. So Mahesh’s father said, “You can go, take the puppy, and give the money to me.” We refused because we were already suspicious and we wanted to see the litter registration papers before finalizing. And Mahesh had given me his word that he would show me those papers before I bought the puppy from him!
Finally, we left his home at 5:15 PM without the puppy. I called Mahesh Kshemkalyani before leaving, and asked him if he could tell his father to show the papers to me. He said the papers were with him in his car. I showed readiness to visit him wherever he was to see the papers, and he immediately hung up on me! We found this behavior very very unsophisticated and inhumanly. We had just waited for over 6 hours and this man lacked courtesy. Later he messaged me and offered that I could pay half price and pick the puppy, and pay remainder money when he would send the papers to me. This confirmed my suspicion because no genuine breeders do that!

Mahesh didn’t show up for more than 6 hours even when he knew that we had driven for 15 hours to meet him, and we had already selected the puppy. I tried calling Mahesh many times before leaving, but after he knew that I was ready to visit him wherever he was, he didn’t answer any of my calls! This sort of behaviour was a good enough reason for anyone to be very sure that Kalyani Kennel and Mahesh Kshemkalyani were simply doing fraud, and that guy Amit and Mahesh’s family was helping him in doing that kind of fraud. It was a well-planned game! They had thought that if we drove for 15 hours, and spent time and money on fuel, we will just pick a puppy in the end. He didn’t expect that we would leave without the puppy!!
This was a horrible experience for all of us because we had thought that Kalyani Kennel was genuine, but we were so wrong! We also noticed that those people were even handling their dogs very badly. They were hitting the dogs, shouting on them loudly and pushing with their feet inside the cages. I couldn’t see any sign of a dog lover in any of those people. My intention to post these details over here is to make sure that no other buyer or dog lover goes to Kalyani Kennel for availing a puppy. They are completely fake and fraud! Don’t buy dogs or puppies from Kalyani Kennel (Nashik) – Mahesh Kshemkalyani.
