One of my dogs has a mite allergy, and mites are everywhere darn it.  I've used white shavings in the dog houses for the most part but am wondering if straw would be better?  Does anybody know which would have less chance of harboring mites?  White shavings or straw.....

Second question.....  Is there a pet safe product to dust or spray inside and out of the dog houses that would help reduce the chance of mites?

I use pine shavings for my dogs crates. It has worked well for me for years.

As for the mite spray. I would get some Ivermectin from Tractor Supply Company (if you have one near you) and mix it water in a 1-10 ratio. That should kill any mites that are in the bedding.

Hope this helps!

I knew someone who had success with something called dustmitex. I believe its all natural as well so shouldn't hurt fido.  Good Luck

Just as long as your dog isn't allergic to pine shavings, you may try that.  Some say that dogs can develop or have respiratory problems from pine or cedar.  I'm not a dog lol, but I'm allergic to both pine or cedar (makes my skin break out/turn red like crazy on my face having sebborehic dermatitis)  and cedar gives me a heck of a lot of breathing problems when I was around it.  A couple of my dogs were allergic to pine as well and it drove them crazy with itching/red skin.  This was back when my pup was younger.  Cleaned it all up, gave them oatmeal baths and no more itching.

Thanks, I'll try the ivermectin watered down or the dustmite.   I may switch to straw for the winter.  Fluffier bed if nothing else.

It is a mite allergy.  Did all the testing and she gets allergy shots too.   Just looking for anything that may make her more comfortable and reduce being exposed to mites.

I wouldn't use straw, straw can harbour mites and god knows what else, if the dogs allergic, what about something like shredded paper?
