This is a breaking story, so the details are sparse.  Officer identified as K-9 handler Derrick Kotecki (sp?),.  R.I.P Officer Kotecki and condolences to his family and his fellow Lower Burrell officers, including his dog.

I'll update when they get their stories in order, probably not until tomorrow morning.  So far, from what I can gather, he was an 18 year veteran and he's leaving a wife and two sons behind.  So senseless.

my condolenses to the family and fellow officers. A senseless crime. I have lost a few friends that were Police Officers, they died in the line of duty.

"According to Lower Burrell's website, Kotecki served in the police department's K-9 division alongside his partner, a German shepherd named Benny. The dog was not shot, but police said the animal had to be muzzled and led away because the dog refused to leave the side of his downed partner."

This is very saddening and tragic. I am so sorry for the officer and his family, and his dog.

I hate criminals with guns! Wish he'd just had the balls to kill himself instead. (I know--- that is not a nice thought. But I thought it anyway.)

How tragic, we had a similar incident last year here in Tampa where K9 officer Yaslowitz was shot, his dog Ace, was brought to the funeral along with the other K9s.  All the dogs began to bark as the car with the casket of the officer drove by, the only dog that couldn't stop barking was K9 Ace, who howled as the car drove past with his partner inside.  A few of the officers said it was the hardest thing to witness, Ace's goodby.

Prayers to Kotecki's family
