How early on in a dogs life can you have a DM test done?

One month.

I plan on testing the kids from my upcomming litter. As I am hanging my head I didn't not fully understand the importance of testing for this and failed to do so before I bred this litter therefore I will spend the big bucs and test before so new owners will know up front.

Thanks, I'm planning on getting the test done on my Husky "pup". He's 25 weeks old so I didn't know if the test could be done that young or not.

Judy, many of us bred litters from untested parents before we realized the value of the test. No reason to hang your head; you are making it right. Stand tall.........

Curiosity ..... What will you do with any that test "at risk?"

Are you talking to me or Judy?
by SitasMom on 05 October 2011 - 22:10
I tested at 4 weeks and the results came back by the time the pups were ready to go home.

If you test the parents, and one or both is clear/clear, then you can know that the puppies are clear by parental testing. If both of the parents have one of the genes, then you will need to test the individual puppies in the litter.

Judy, Why not test the parents first? It is my understanding that if one parent is a carrier or at risk and the other parent is clear, some of the pups will likely be carriers. If both parents are clear, then all the pups will be clear. If both carry the gene in some form, then you may have some pups at risk.
