Puppy abandoned! Need help guessing the breed! - Page 1

Hi guys!

This puppy was dumped near my house earlier. He faithfully waited there for the scumbags to comeback and get him but of course they werent coming back!  He is absolutely under socialized and scared to death of people. Can you blame him! Its obvious that the only interaction he has had from humans was bad interaction. When you go near him he tucks his head like "please dont see me". Poor baby!

Took me an hour on the hot road to lure him to me. I knew I had only one chance to get ahold of him and once he got close enough I went for it. He snapped once purely out of reation and fear. Hasnt shown any real signs of aggression.

Any ideas what his breed is. Usually I can guess a mix, but he is tough for me because he is brindle but doest have a hound or bully face..


He really looks like a dutchie but I know thats not it. He has all puppy teeth except for the very front teeth. I would guess he is about 4 months or so...

He looks like a whippet or whippet mix to me. Very nice looking pup too!

If you want to give it a name, call him a Lurcher...  tis a hybred breed, but a VERY old one.  In England poachers would cross sight hounds such as greyhound, Whippet, Wolfhound or Deer hound with Border collie, or beardie... giving a quick dog who was more obedient than sight hounds tended to be. They'd sneak onto the estates with their Poacher's Dog and use them to chase down game without using weapons. The Vet I worked for has had several, and two of them looked much like this pup.  The other two he had were longer haired having a grandsire who was a deerhound. They're NOT a "designer dog" as such, but more of a rarebreed, though they are still being produced by crossing rather than breeding one to another.  The best of his 4 was 1/4 border collie, 1/2 whippet, 1/4 greyhound. the crosses generally go more toward the sight hound in % than the herding dogs.    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lurcher

give him a few days and when he's a bit more comfortable, take some more photos. the angle of the photos makes his nose look so our of proportion.

where do you live (more or less)? He looks a bit like a shepherd x catahoula

Yeah, a better angle is needed. He has a Shepherdy face, but the angle and expression can be deceptive. Also whippet/greyhound type eyes...but again...a better angle is needed, and some full body shots.

How is the pup today, is he still terrified or starting to come around?

He's young and my become a great dog

Looks like a greyhound or whippet X to me ...greyhounds come in brindle too...
