Last night, my son stopped in and asked if all my dogs were home, which they were. He told me he seen a small Shepherd down the road from my house, and when he stopped, the dog hauled ass into the woods.
Today, someone passing stopped and asked if I was missing a dog. i told them no, mine are all here. He told same story. When they stopped, the dog took off into the woods.
I asked them to bring some dog food down the road and I'd be there shortly. they called me, told me the dog woofed the can of food down and ran into the woods as if terrified. They said 1.8 miles from my house they left the food.
I live in the boon-docks. It's not normal to see a stray dog in the area.
I got some more dog food and drove down the road, and sure enough, at 1.8 miles I pulled over, and shook the food in the pail, and here she comes. A very young, TERRIFIED black and tan shepherd female.
i put some more food down, she ran over, gobbled it, and took off back into the woods. She wants no part of people, just the food. I left her some more food and my sweatshirt, off the road, into the woods.
I'm going back down in awhile with more canned food and to sit and try to talk with her.
Should I bring my young pup with me, go alone, what. That isn't all.
While calling for her, I found a young male cat. In the middle of NO WHERE. He came right to me.He ate a can of tuna when I got home like he hasn't eaten for a week. he is very light(in weight).
Pretty obvious the two got dumped off togeather. the cat is younger so he don't know how rotten people can be yet, but that poor girl does.
My son told me call the dog catcher. I'm NOT going to do that just yet. there are so many unwanteds already in the pound.i'd like to try to give this girl a chance for a home.
Any suggestions how to catch her are more than needed here.

Will she come to you and eat the food out of your hand? Or would you have a way you could possibly "noose" her? Bad thing about that is that you only get one shot. Could you possibly get one of those live traps big enough for her?
Thats something you could try.... take a crate and tie a string to the door and loop it through one of the slots, so when the rope is held tight, the door can't open... maybe put something heavy in/around it so it cant move.... and then put a can of food in the back of it. Wait for her to go in and pull the crate door shut. You'll hafta be quick, or sneaky enough.
Good luck and keep us updated!

Actually, try to use your car as the trap. Bait the insides with food, led by a trail of food. Hopefully she has been in a car before, it might work to your advantage. Be ready to slip a lead over her head. Hope you don't leave the cat!
Could it be someone was hoping you'd find this girl.......? Very suspicious, poor thing!

A breeder in our area had given one of her breeding females away. She got away from the new owners within the first 24 hours and was wondering around the woods about 2 miles from the breeders. She was spotted often but would run when she saw people. She was out there for 3 months. Finally they used the live traps and caught her the next day. Just have to make sure you can check them often after setting it up.

I'd check with a vet you trust. If you have the time to wait it out get the fastest tranq. Sprinkle it on the food, let her gobble it up and viola! Yes, there might be a risk to an extent but just imagine how she will act when caged, just ate and wants to book? Different options but you only get probabaly one shot at most if not all of them.

I had a vet friend that darted a stray dog for me... the dog had some wire around its paw and was in horrible condition......I talked him into coming over and darting the dog, we're able to save its paw and once caught was a really nice dog... I kept him for many years.

If there is a zoo in your area, check to see who the zoo vet is, he can dart the dog. Zoo vets are good at this. Also conservation officers often have practice in this type of apprehension of "wild" animals.
