What raw food items (like chicken necks) are safe for puppies and at what ages would you begin giving them?  Kibble is the main meal but I think giving some raw every day or every other would improve their health and immune systems and am interested in hearing what items exactly are reccomended.  Thanks!

Just at 7 weeks eating a whole rabbit.

I started them on chicken necks right at 4.5 weeks.

I wean all of my pups on cottage cheese, butter milk and raw hamburger. NO KIBBLE! 30 + litters no loose stools. I add chicken necks at about 5 weeks along with starting to add kibble to the cottage cheese mx. Most of mine nurse on mom also until 6 and sometimes even 8 weeks if mom allows it. Mother's milk is always best for as long as possible in my eyes. It adds mom's immunities and is, of course, the most balanced for puppies.

I throw down a whole chicken at 5 weeks of age and they hit it like pyrhannas.

I started with ground meat bone mixes, chicken necks and duck necks.  Also meaty chicken rib bones I get a case for like 25.00.

I also wean mine onto raw hamburger meat and milk (usually goats milk or if not available, pasturized milk). At about 5-6 weeks I start feeding small chicken legs. By 8-10 weeks they are on chicken leg quarters and beef.

what amount (like in kg, gram or pounds,) chicken is needed for a puppy( upto 5 months old) per day ?

by VomMarischal on 22 September 2011 - 15:09

I feed growing puppies the amount that will be appropriate for them as adults. In other words, if I expect a dog to grow to 75 lbs, I feed enough for a 75lb dog to a 20lb puppy, only it's spread out over three or four meals.

Anyone tried Honest Kitchen for weaning?  Just curious, as I have had some litters (past years of course) that started weaning at 3 weeks;  bitches said I am out of here with teeth coming in.  Completely weaned at 4-5 weeks;  so that seems a little young for raw chicken?? Or Not;  I have used hamburger  before;  my friend's bitch is whelphing in about a month and I am trying to find a good weaning diet for the puppies.  Great days everyone,  Nan

I'm planning on using THK for this litter. I will be feeding them in my kitchen, this time, and w/my 2yr old who canNOT leave the puppies alone and thinks he, too, should sleep in the whelping box, straight raw isn't going to work. The last thing I need is a kid gnawing on a leg quarter when I turn my back...you'll see me on the news. Capri's pups are nasty little monsters and always are starting to be weaned at 3 weeks, so I plan on starting them out w/the THK around 2.5 weeks so they can get a feel for eating solid(ish) food so they're ready to go if she jumps ship early. I will feed them whole prey, also, but not exclusively.  They get really aggressive with her and I figure if they can get that aggressive and do that much damage to their mother, they can do it to a chicken!

I have used all sorts of things and really never had a problem, fwiw. This time will only be different because of practicality w/my son, not a problem w/prey model raw for tiny ones.
