I understand that the HT title is the most basic of herding.
In your opinion, how meaningful is the HT title for a GSD?

The HT shows that the dog shows sustained interest in moving the stock in a controlled fashion, without chasing or harassing. The dog and handler need to have done some training for this test as the dog must gather the stock to the handler, move them calmly across the pen, work in both directions, and be called off the stock by the handler. Of course it nowhere compares to the German Style tending that GSDs are supposed to do, but it gives you an idea of whether or not the dog has what it takes to go further in herding training or competition.

Excellent summary. A dog is not going to pass without any instinct or control, but it's not an extensive testing.

I agree with everyone else. I think it is good--I did it with my old girl Sadie and she was a whiz--it's awesome to see that light turn on--I know what to do mom let me at them. BTW she had never seen a sheep in her life when we went.

Vonissk - I think you are talking about the Herding Instinct Test.
The Herding Test or Pre-Trial Test require some training. The dog has to move the sheep in a pattern, but it is not as extensive as the Started classes.

Oh OK I get confused on all the pre trial things. I know what we got is a certificate and it says Herding Instinct Certified.
One deal of the pre trial things I looked at said the dog had to come to you and also it had to either stop, sit or lay down when told to and that was the only requirements.
