IS THIS KANGAL DOG SUITABLE AS A FAMILY PET,, OR LIKE AN OVCHARKA IS IT ONLY FOR SERIOUS AND WELL TRAINED OWNERS?????

I think they are very loyal and protective of their "flock/pack" but they can dominate children. They do not tolerate intruders. They are not suitable for protection training and are not for people who want a very obedient dog as they are independent and they also need someone who is willing to excerise leadership but not be harsh physically. Make sure you get a true Kangal and not an Anatolian or a mix.

P.S. IF you are not highly experienced dealing with large dominant dogs, DO NOT get a Kangal. They are quite capable of killing someone and turning on you if you do not know how to handle one. From your post about cats, I do not think you are an experienced pet owner of cats or dogs and would never recommend a Kangal. They are fast and strong and they will test your leadership and they will turn their 150-170 pounds on you if you do not know how to get a dogs respect without being cruel or harsh. They are not a dog for the inexperienced pet owner and they will not have the same desure to please as many other breeds. Even with experience they require a lot of time, a lot of room a very secure fence and don't expect them to welcome new people, including a girlfriend, wife or family that only visits occaisionally.

I think hunger4justice about covered it all about this breed. I know I would never own one!

I had never heard of the Kangal dog so I looked it up online, the site said that Turkey doesn't allow them to be exported out of the country since the breed is considered a national treasure, so how are we getting them anywhere else?

they are great dogs but differ by far from a gsd or belgian malinois or rottweiler.
They have minds of their own. If they see a danger, they will not wait for the order from you to attack.. They will attack.
I think you can have them if you can handle them.. They are big, strong and headstrong. But after all , they are just dogs.

I thought they were illegal in many places, and there was like one breeder in the US? I think it would be a stupid idea to get a dog like that, it's a liability waiting to happen.

not even a mountain lion can intimidate a Kangal. i've seen that Chinese tv docu about these big Asiatic dogs, including the Tibetan Mastiff.
