Hi everyone,
my new 5 month old pup is eating his own pooh. ive tried incresing his food but still
its not working. What should i do.
Ali
Factors responsible for such may include boredom, leaving him alone for too long at a time and not "'properly' house-broken". Other factors may include some nutritional deficient. For control, try feeding twice daily, know when he may pooh and take him for a short walk to encourage him to do it outside(you must remove as quickly as possible). ie if you feed him in the morning, walk him outside in the afternoon, fed late in the evening, take him out first thing early the next morning. Try this routine for some time. Goodluck.

What food is he eating right now. Try a grain free food, and try adding some spices like a meat tenderizer to his food as well. Keep the yard cleaned up as much as possible too. Is he using the bathroom in the house? Or is it right after he goes outside? Does he go around just searching for it to eat like I've seen some dogs do? My pup attempted to eat his own (only right after he did it, and he wouldn't go for anyone elses) when he was younger, like 9 to 10 weeks of age. At the time he had been having mostly 4Health dog food which has grains in it. So I went to Taste of the Wild again, added meat tenderizor spices to it each time, and for him he stopped within about a week. Grain free foods digest better, somehow.....I have no clue how, but foods that don't digest as well still taste good (shakes head) to them.... Your pup is 5 months old though, my guess is he did it before he came to you. It could be because he was bored outside, he could have been on a crappy food like Purina, or many other reasons. If you do what the other poster suggested, it may help, but it will only cover the problem. You need to see if you can completely stop it. Grain free food + spices worked like a charm for my guy. Just a thought....
This works almost instantly
http://www.jefferspet.com/forbid/camid/PET/cp/BW-F7/ it's makes the poop taste bad to them. LOL
I have a lifetime poop eater that I rescued and she's the only one it hasn't worked on.
I would make sure your pup is getting enough food and also on a nutritionally balanced diet before using the forbid.
I think Enzymes help as well.
We have used Pro-zyme and also Bert's Zymes by B-natural.
A friend in Holland told me to feed Pineapple. I believe that pineapple contains the enzyme papain.
For-bid works as mentioned by vtgsd. Also Adolph's meat tenderizer, which also contains enzymes.
goodluck!
Try Brewers Yeast which can be purchased from a health store. Just a teaspoon with his feed. This was recommended by my pup's breeder and it worked. Remember to stop adding it when he stops eating his poo.
All the best,
Sangar
I would not increase the food, unless there is another reason. They don't eat the poop because they are really starving. If you overfeed, it's possible the pup will then have more poop, mushier poop, less digestion...making the poop even MORE yummy for the puppy. Feed him a good quality food of the right amount.
My puppy ate his poop until he was about 8 months. I was ready to start with an e-collar and that week he quit doing it.
VKGSDs.....poop....and yummy in the same sentence lol. Dogs are interesting creatures.
One of the reasons a puppy eats his stools is the remaining Proteins in the poop, try giving him a less content of Protein in his diet. Usually when you give a puppy a natural diet (not kibble) it does not eat its poop.
