Anyone given Vitamin K shots, if so what was the outcome?  What did you give it for?

by jcmeyer on 10 September 2011 - 14:09

It is used in the treatment of accidental anticoagulant poisoning.  Some rodenticides contain coumarins that work by depleting VitK which is integral to the blood clotting process. A variety of factors will determine the efficacy of this therapy and treatment should be administered and monitored by a licensed veterinarian.

OK thank you;  I thought it was used to build up the blood, like iron shots.  My mistake.  Of course I would have my vet administer.  I have an old boy who needs some help right now and am searching for something to help to build up his red blood cells.  He won't eat liver plain, I do feed some organ meats to him ground but I don't think it's enough to take care of the problem.  Just searching, any other suggestions are welcome.  Thx  Nan

Hi Nan,

Except raw food, you can also add all green leaved vegetables, milk, and milk products (yogurt, cheese) to his diet. I would add red berries as well, just in case the Vitamin C production of your dog's organism is compromised. Vitamin C is needed to store and utilize iron in the body. You could also get Floradix Iron Liquid from a health food store and add it to his diet. Floradix is 100% vegetarian and easy to absorb.

Thanks Ting, I will go get that today.  Knew there must be something I could try.  Don't trust the animal Red Cell builders; ususally a horse product;  tried that on a dog with Lukemia some years ago and did not help at all.  I don't think you can tell the quality of the animal stuff.
I really appreciate, this guy eats raw but is a terrrible, skinny eater.  I have managed to get SOME weight on him I think, I will know next week when I take him back to vet for weight.  He seems to feel a little better but do not want him to loose any more strength as he was struggeling to get up last week a couple of times;  vet said he would become weak;  why don't they act then rather than later.  well I am not waiting for him to tell me to give him this or that;  just going to do it.  Thank you again,  Nan  Great days everyone.

PS:  he will eat and loves leafy greens, cottage cheese/any kind of cheese and yes berries also;  they tend to know what they need don't they.  Yogart also good as adding vit C could offset the acid/alkaline balance I am trying to achieve.  Nan

Not exactly sure what all vitamin k does.......but I know with creams....on people, it helps heal broken blood vessels.  Obviously that's with people and creams.......and not dogs/shots, but I know it at least does that.

Hi Jenni:  Well after blood, urine, and x-raying the whole spine and neck, he is  11 years old; and is  in kidney failure which causes anemia.  I noticed last week, not so much last couple of days, but last week he seemed to be falling a lot;  legs going out from under him and ker-splat. not hard falling but still struggling to get up and a little tinckling when trying to get up.  Vet put him on tagament (people anti-acid) and sodium bicarb tablets to balance PH.   Seems last few days much better but wanted to catch anemia before it gets ahead of me.

I heard /vit K was used with dogs during some chemo treatments to build up blood, etc and to just assist dogs to just feel better.  Guess that isn't the case.  Am searching for assistance for this boy.  KNow he's old but want to keep him as comfortable as possible.  Haven't started iron supp as of yet but will start tomorrow.  Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.  Thx  soooooo much  Nan

Ok- kidney failure is something I know about! (Unfortunately)

Vom Marischal told me about a supplement that is supposed to be FANTASTIC for kidney issues. I can't remember what it's called and will have to look it up from my PMs and get back to you.

CoQ10 is good, as is calcium, as it binds the phosphorus, which is bad for dogs in kidney failure.  I recently read on another forum about a dog in early kidney failure that wild salmon oil was the only thing the lady added to the diet and the dogs levels came back to normal, despite the vet saying it was irreversible. Hey, it can't hurt. Also, B12 and folic acid can be beneficial for the anemia that accompanies kidney failure. Iron is the obvious, but kidney failure patients don't always absorb oral pills as well as shots, so that's something to consider.

What are you feeding him currently?

by Nans gsd on 11 September 2011 - 02:09

currently on raw diet, chicken, some organ meats ground, HK zeal with raw ground meat mixed in AM, chicken/pork necks, beef necks, and anything else I can find raw for PM feedings.  Ground meats consist of beef, pork, turkey mixed with HK and a duck patty for fat and he likes them, he is a really crappy eater so really he gets anything he will eat.  No kibble.  Treats I bought Ziwi Peak venison.  Cool treats though and only occasionally for those.  Loves apples, give those a couple times per week raw, romaine lettuce, some eggs, some yogart, some cottage cheese, cheese for treats or if I have to give him pills in cheese, but only a little bit at a time.  So that's about it, some other treats of cooked chicken; or a little cooked fish from our dinners or scrambled eggs, also raw eggs a couple times per week.  That's about it.  Thx for any info you have.  Nan

Yes and Ting Tails above mentioned an plant based iron supplement I am picking up tomorrow, could not get it today;  will try that and see how he does on that and increase red berry fruits;  Thx again Ting.  I am sure he will love the red berries of any type, I have strawberries on hand and blueberries.  Will give those also.  Loves fruits.  Not a lot but some.

Ate well tonight chicken quarter + 2 drum sticks.  NOt bad.,   Made me happy.  Know I can't cure, but would like to keep him comfortable as possible for as long as possible.  Thx  again  Nan

I did buy him a supplement for enhance kidney function, he runs when I come towards him with the bottle and hates it; puked it up one night so stopped it.  Has been a week ago, will try it again.  Made by Pets Alive, Kidney Function assist.??  Was worth a try and willing to try again, I'll put it on a piece of bread or cheese??  He'll eat anything with cheese.  TG.  Nan
