Just looking for opinions on supplementing fish oils to the dogs diet. Some information saying its bad due to high levels of mercury now found in fish, others saying its good but should be supplemted with vitamin E. Just looking to know whats best to give for health, joint mobility and a nice coat?

I give all my dogs fish oil - 2 tabs a day.  I purchase the Spring Valley fish oil - 1000 mg.  Get it at walmart in the "human" vitamin section.  Cost 6.00 for two bottles.

I find that it helps with there coat -(shedding/shine) and their skin.  No dry flakes.......  I can tell a difference when I am too lazy to go buy some when I run out.....

I also buy the same brand in Glucosamine - 1000 mg

Best Regards

I have mixed feeling's about fish oil, however I do give my GSD's 1 1000mg every other day. Not to sure about giving supplements. I try to give them all they need with there diet. I feed raw.

I used to use Salmon Oil until I found Raw Fish dog food :o) - clearly makes a shiny difference for the coat! I agree with Isachev, I'm not really comfortable with supplementing the food. If you don't have fish raw food in your area, why not try fish filet once a week?

I use and recommend only WILD SALMON BODY oil, not "fish oil," not "salmon oil," or any others. The reason you want WILD is the mercury in farm-raised fish. Check carefully into the oil you're using. And yes, you do need to give vitamin e w/wild salmon oil because utilizing the oil (if given in excess) can deplete the dogs' bodies' stores of it. This is more a concern with cats, but to err on the side of caution, don't overdo it, but a 400iu for a GSD is a good idea to feed along w/the salmon oil if your salmon oil isn't preserved w/vitamin E to begin with. Basically...pay attention to what you're feeding;-)

Jen Where do you get your Wild salmon oil, I have been researching this for a while, was wondering what to give.

Lyn, it actually varies. As long as it's wild salmon oil, and I'm happy with the level of contaminants (when I research it), I buy what's least expensive at that time. I have used the Grizzly brand and liked it because they measure in pumps, which is waaaay easier than trying to figure out who gets how many "ounces" when you have 6-9 hungry dogs waiting for their food. Even I can count number of pumps under that pressure. ;-)

I use krill oil jells as training treats......

They each get 3 or 4 a day and love them!

The only thing I supplement with is Grizzly Salmon Oil and vitamin E.
